I like cable because of the simplicty and feel, but there is no real worry asto which one 'should' use.

If you want a 500bhp 172 engine with a box that can hold it, no problem......but it will not be cheap and...
we have pretty much moved to the conclusion that if you want a strong box that will not fail, you will be spending 3-7K on one.
A competition box might be strong, but it does not survive the rigours of daily use. And a competition gearset will drive you crazy with noise.

Depends on the engine and spec.
Older engines like the F7 require timing via setting relative valve positions at set crank positions.
The F4 requires cam setting tools in near stock trims and the cams are ground in to work with the installation tools that lock the camshafts for lift @ tdc...

The rebuild service totally depends on the specification your going for, but that stock ish build cost circa £4k including new engine, all the modifications highlighted, all new genuine renault parts, new high flow low cavitation oil pump, ARP rod bolts, cams, headwork, machining and circa 35...
