With my old 172 I put some springs on an within 2 -3 month the dampers where leaking oil, there have been a few on here that have had the same.
So Id recommend getting coilovers or a full kit of spring and shocks. IMO
Your cars only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. IMO
Youll be better off trying to sell it yourself could try ebay at last resort!!!

rubbing noise from behind steering wheel
I had this problem on my imported 172 Mk1, when I turned the steering wheel it was as if a bearing had collapsed and was very notchy.
Replaced, BUT had to pay 40% of final cost as warranty was out. Total cost was about £400 from whhat I can remember.
