My understanding is that the std. Compression ration of 11:1 like HardcoreSax mentioned isnt good for running a turbo - engine close to detonation !
I would start with a bottom end rebuild using different pistons, etc. before going the turbo route on a 172. A turbo 172 is going to be quick...
Thats a very valid point about the weight thing! When we weighed 172s on a weigh bridge we had full tanks of fuel. perhaps 40 to 50 kg of weight. Do renault publish vehicle weight based on a full tank of petrol as well?

From a previous postabout the larger throttle body.
Inner diameter of the inlet is 70mm, which I think is about 13mm bigger than standard.
Here is a picture of the larger throttle body - between £700 and £800 - a CON.

Can you think of a larger throttle body from a renault car that would go on and would flow better? Im assuming that the one I have doesnt have any electronic stuff in it and is a mechanical device. I guess there must be companies that manufacture ones similar to mine.
Will see what I can dig...
They are indeed. Used alot in motorsport - super bikes and cars. Price starts around £400 a rim - so not cheap. They tend to do custom stuff. e.g. Aston Martin got then to design and manufacture a lightweight wheel for them.

I remember seeing a Japanese firm that did a larger single throttle body for the 172 but it cost loads. Ive got the MK1 throttle body without the FBW.
So if we take the std. 172 inlet manifold. I can probably get one fairly cheap from clio cup racer parts bin.
I know of several specialists...
These unfortunately are expensive per corner but are the ultimate in lightness. 4.9 KG each and that is for 17" - compare with SuperLs which I think are around the 7KG mark for 17". If I had the money then this is what Id go for. 15"s weight even less and you would be looking at quite a big...

Hi Ben,
What areas would need to be changed on the inlet manifold and the standard TB - is it easy to do?. I guess making these changings would require ecu remap to take into account better breathing?
Cheers,
Simon
What do you reckon the possible BHP gains would be from getting the head and inlet/exhaust manifolds gas flowed/ported on the 172 and sticking with the std. cams? in addition then take into account, decat, full stainless steel exhaust, viper and ECU remap - what would be the bhp gains then...
Ive been wasted by quite a few cars and they are always high powered turbos. e.g. 280 bhp Cosworth sierra, 310 bhp P1, 911 Turbo latest shape. Held a std. Cosworth from 40 till !30 (private race track) then he overtook and I got upto about !50ish. The 200 Turbo coupe though was a very close...

Ive raced a modified one up to !00 ish (on a private road) and it was very close. But then it was modified - apparently exhaust, filter and chip. Dont know what bhp it was pulling though.

Had loads, win the majority. The ones that have beaten me include:
Modified Cosworths - 280 bhp+
P1 - 310 bhp
911 Turbo
Modified Twin Turbo Supra
All of the above caned me convincinly, although I have had a couple of good races with 2 std. cosworths.
Had a close run with Nick Reed...
Cheers Guys.
Got my knocking noise sorted today after following your advice.
Its been with the car for the last 18 months - now gone - nice one.
The garage were really helpful as well - they believed me and had a look!
