With the engine off, lying underneath if I move the wheels from side to side there is lot of sloshing noise in the steering rack. Is that normal, I thought the valves inside the rack would stop the fluid sloshing about?
There is a lot to check, but I would change the fluid, check the mounting bushes for wear and the rack for leaks and go from there to rule that side out.
Loosen the alternator. When you get to it you will see what I mean by this. Budgie is right, the tensioners do break. There is a tool you can buy, but I still use a jubilee clip as it keeps your hands free and I just use it to hold it in place. I mean 'Jubilee', the branded ones and not just a...
Try calling Dan at SJM, he's a trader on here and recommended someone to me near Glastonbury in Somerset (not a million miles away from you). I wouldn't use Agency Transmissions in Worcester again myself, but many on here have used them and would again.
I replaced the original at 140,000 miles because it was making 159 HP. The folk at Surrey Rolling Road described it a 'leggy' i.e. a bit old. The replacement I used was on an undocumented 60,000 miles at the time, it came from a Mk1 conversion that was a stripped out track car and after some...
Try Ebay as well, but avoid Renparts as their prices are almost like buying a reconditioned one direct from Renault (and they'll send out the wrong one!). Best of luck.
Under the gear stick (viewed from below the car with the heat shield out of the way) are an orange plastic bush and a rubber piece at the base of the gear stick where it joins the linkage bar. I replaced the bush (available from Renault) hoping that would fix the sloppy action on mine, it...
I have some movement in the steering column (Ph1 172) and thought it was the height adjustment mechanism just not engaging properly, but having tried it again it does seem to be moving in all positions. Is there a bearing on the column that could be the cause or do these height adjustment...
My version of Dialogys stopped working when I changed my computer so I need a new version. I have seen you can buy it from Ebay, but wondered if anyone has done this recently and if it worked properly?
I replaced all mine with genuine new ones after I suspected the originals had become a bit old after 14 years in use. It was pointless, mad naff all difference; ran OK before and the same after.
You don't need to buy the genuine Renault one, I got a replacement about five years ago and it's been fine. I'll dig out the brand later, Fred told me about them (when he was around that is).
Is it a 197? I won't go to AT in Worcester again, mine went to them twice (a 172) for a straightforward refresh of the syncros and bearings, it was still not right after I sent it back to them and they'd tried to do it for a second time.
My serpentine belt (I just fancied using a different term there!) snapped and it just made the steering feel heavy and stopped charging the battery for a bit, did no harm overall.
I've been left with a Clio that sounds like a combination of a Singer sewing machine or a Suffolk Punch. To those who don't know what this is, it's an old petrol 2 stroke lawnmower. But at least the gearbox was given a clean up.
My 172 makes the same power as the two other folk have mentioned and without the 182 manifold. Mine was tested at Surrey Rolling Road so probably fairly reliable. IMO it's about as beneficial for power gains as matched inlets (remember BenR, anyone?).
That's rubbish of them. You need the ones with 46 teeth from memory, some have 20 something (26?) and will cause sensor issues. I'm lucky, I live close to Trowbridge so I went to the guys house and collected them myself.
The rings only cost about a tenner. I got mine from a company based in Trowbridge. You need to remove the hub but it's quite easy to fit them. It sorted out the same problem for me. I've never got an ABS sensor out, always had to drill them to bits and fit new ones.
