I take it you either installed kubuntu or have adhoc'd the install of KDE to ubunut ?
normally to get from runlevel 3 to runlevel 5 I would issue the command
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start
I believe for KDE (havent used KDE for a long time) that the command is
sudo /etc/init.d/kdm start

Technically the memory isn't emptied on shut down. The ram is volatile and needs any information in it to be refreshed every few milliseconds. As soon as you cut power to them it can no longer hold the data.

vi -r {your file name}
swap files are hidden by default. You can view hidden files by using
ls -h
to remove the hidden file you would use
rm .yourfilename.swp
Files starting with a . are hidden. Hope that helps.
As stated, not all motherboards have onboard VGA.

As Daz has said already LVM is great for expanding your disks at a later date.
There is no downside to using LVM over any other method and at least the flexibility is there at a later date if you need it. Infact its actually very very easy to do.
