Correct, however the test is actually a check, a 'vehicle identity check' and nothing to do with the standard of repairs. The tester can refuse the test though for whatever reason and effectively fail the car for something totally unrelated. My mates car failed a VIC check a few years however...

No mate. I've spent £800 on a ph1 that had just had dephaser and cambelt done. Spent between £1,000-1,200 on top so far, that has got me buckets/coilovers/service items/seatbelt/cup alternator/vibratechnics mounts/polycarb side windows. Not sure where 14k came from, or that I weigh 18 stone.

Why don't you go to a bodyshop mate just to get a quote? Bumpers and panels can be repaired and don't always need replacing. May be more expensive, but you might have colour match problems on certain colours if you just replace panels/bumpers from a breakers. Black is usually ok but light...

Nick, you're right about the corner weighting, this will be done when the cars all back together. I know it will obviously sort the handling a lot but surely its ideal to get the weight balance as best as possible, and then getting it corner weighted and set up properly?

Polycarbonate is supposed to be very strong, could also add a special film (similar to security film for glass windows) as another measure of protection. I'm sure NASCAR racers use polycarb windscreens. Suppose I better do a bit of research about about the safety implications of polycarb...
