There is a set formula for calculating interest on a loan and how it is paid back during the life of a loan.
Most people think that their loan payment (of say £100) will have a fixed interest element (e.g. £10 if 10% rate). Unfortunately its a lot more complicated than that and Ive worked...
As has been mentioned, I used to have Williams No.123 - it now belongs to Smokey McPot. I had no real reason to sell it and regretted it immensely later on. I had a Ph2 172 until a few weeks ago, which I have since replaced with my second Fiat Coupe 20V Turbo.
In terms of what a hard core...
I definitely enjoyed my Williams (and 16V) more than I enjoy my 172.
Perhaps its because I had a Fiat Coupe 20V Turbo in between, which gave me a bit of perspective? Perhaps Ive grown out of Clios for the time being? I dont know.
To be fair, I really cant see how my Willy handled any...
I had a freak Clio 16V that was making 155+bhp at the fly with minimal mods. It cost me a lot of time and money over the 2 years I had it, but it was a lovely, very raw car.
16Vs and Williams were notorious back in the day for being mileage sensitive giving over book power figures once...
The idling on my 16V/Williams/172 has always been pretty rough - but I think thats the sign of a fairly high performance engine.
What my 172 does though is to give a big flat spot at about 2,500rpm for the first few minutes. I just accept it as part of the character.
I was in a similar position at the start of the year - i.e. wondering whether to get a new 182 or a used 172.
I got a 3-year old 172 Ph2 because the bang per buck factor was higher. Finding a brand new 182 for less than £13k wasnt that easy when I added all the extras and considered that I...
I cant believe that no-one has mentioned a S1 Lotus Elise yet. Surely at the top of any £10k sports car shopping list.
As a package of performance, practicality, economy and safety though - a 172/182 is hard to beat.
Sainsburys have 97ron fuel in most of the petrol stations for less than std 95ron in most other places. I try to use it as much as possible, given the price.
Dont tint the windows - IMO it takes away the "performance" look of the car and swaps it for the "11pm Friday night High Street show-off" look.
Id consider lowering the car, but not the wheels either. A strong part of the identity of a 172 Cup is the Turini wheels IMO.
Tread carefully - for £25k+ (when you add the 182) is a lot to have tied up in cars and depreciating.
The 182 clearly isnt as luxurious, solid or quite as quick in a straight line as the R32. However, a 182 will return 35mpg overall (and into the 40s taking it gently on long runs), cost less...
Ive personally had three Mk1s, but have now got a Mk2.
I guess that as the Mk1s get older, less people will be running them as their daily driver and more will be used as track and fun machines. Plus, of course, there is the tendency for older hot hatches to get crashed, trashed or not get...
What *is* the opposition though?
The CTR is in the class above - and in any case, that class is moving towards 225bhp+ as the norm. Thats why we have the Renaultsport Megane.
The Renaultsport Clio will probably head the supermini class for power, just like it has this time. When the 172...
Ive not read this thread, but this is what the ex-owner of my 172 PMd me the other day in relation to the Cupra R:
Hi Ben,
Hope the car is going well mate. Just been looking at that thread on the Cupra R...
I wanted to post that I went up against Hippychicks chipped Cupra R around...
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!
I was so gutted when I saw this topic post!
My other half has a 51 plate 1.2 8v, which I drive a lot. It doesnt actually suck to be honest - and can be hustled along at a decent pace.
I paid £7,800 for my 02 172 with 19k on the clock back in February (private) - just a guide for you, although Im sure youd pay more like £7,500 these days.
Parkers still guides the values for 172s much higher than they seem to sell for.
Thats strange, because its usually the other way around!
I dont think that, for most people, the choice will come down to these two.
If youre seriously considering the V6, I think it likely that youd also be considering something like an Elise alongside it - not a CTR.
I dont think its likely youll find one for £10,500... unless youre very lucky and get F&F somehow. Its most likely that youll find a brand new 182 for about £12,000 at the cheapest (once youve accounted for the road tax etc) from a car supermarket. When I looked in January, I couldnt get one...
Im not intending to insult anyones choice in buying a 182, but just want to point out to GuyS the logic of going for an older car.
I was in a position to comfortably afford a new 182 when I began looking for a small hot hatch to replace my car. I pretty much knew I wanted a hot Mk2 Clio, but...
Interestingly, according to Whar Car the 182 is one of the best small hot hatches in terms of cost of ownership over 3 years. Although it will be worth 49% trade at the end of that period (still pretty good overall), the fact you can get them cheap in the first place makes it one of the...
One of the reasons I was doubting Audi quality is because a friend of mine has an A3 which has had a string of faults, like worn wheel bearings, which Id say was very poor considering its only on 15k miles. Theyre also only averagely rated in the fleet reliability and owner satisfaction...
If you think the dipstick is poor on a 172/182, try it with a bum basic 8v 1.2!!
I checked my other halfs oil just before doing a long journey and it was fine. On beginning the next journey the light was flashing at me!! Weird.
