Ive certainly never heard of this before. It would be a lot cheaper and easier to sell the Clio and buy a 106 GTi or Saxo VTS.
Nice 106 GTis can be had for around £3k these days.
Right.
I visited a local Renault specialist (ex dealer) today and was quoted £120 + VAT. Probably wasnt quite as cheap as Id been hoping, but I know the garage by reputation - and its better than paying £60 more from Renault.
I think 190bhp would be plenty if the weight issue is resolved.
The next class up (e.g. Leon, Astra, Focus size) may well be powered to the tune of 225+bhp, but they are bigger cars - and not quicker.
I expect the new Clio will still be the most powerful in the supermini class.
Renault Cardiff have just quoted me £216 inc. VAT for my 172s 24k service. Pah! Time to ring an independent Renault specialist methinks. Watch this space!
I fitted some new pads to my 172 today using the guide from the Exterior & Mechanical section, which was a very helpful guide.
Changing the pads is extremely easy to do, although just for you to note that my 172 (which has seen a couple of track sessions) needed pads at 23k and my other halfs...
I almost bought a 106 GTi after I sold my Valver, but got a Williams instead.
Its hard if youre a private buyer and want to get a good look at a car youve never seen before, so I went to look at half a dozen or so. I was impressed with the 106, dont get me wrong, but a lot of the stuff Id...
Id go for a custom stainless exhaust from somewhere like Prospeed (Cardiff) - in the same "stealth" style as the original.
Its an essential upgrade once your exhaust has died.
Is it your rear drums that are squeaking rather than the front discs? If so, the above does not apply!!
My other halfs 1.2 of a similar age has squeaky rear drums.
My way of thinking is that you could well get £6k for your low mileage 172, sold privately.
Youd probably get a brand new 182 for around £12-13k nowadays.
Thats £6k difference, but at least its for a new car - whereas youre looking at a minimum of £3k to change to that Monaco Blue 172. I...
Ive got a Monaco Blue Ph2 and am very glad I got the colour, but would have to ask whether its worth the price difference to go from your 172. It looks like the difference could be about £3k+, even if you sell privately.
Obviously youd get the balance of the warranty, better spec and a nicer...
I went for a Ph2 172 because when it comes down to it (i.e. looking through Autotrader, not here), theres not a massive price difference between the two given a budget of say £6-8k.
You will be told that the Ph1 is quicker, although I doubt its going to be an issue for most people because...
Thanks for all your work Nick - remember I came down to the first "national" Cliosport meet in Southend, all the way from Scotland when I was there lol?
Best of luck, from one of the first wave of national members (when Cliosport started reaching out of Essex lol).
110bhp, 9.5 secs to 60 and probably about high 20s/early 30s secs to 100.
Warm rather than hot - probably quick enough to keep up with most 2.0 litre cars in the class above.
I get about 100 miles per £10 I stick in - give or take 10 miles due to fluctuations in petrol pricing and the way I drive it.
Its been much the same with my 16V, Williams and 172.
Just for the record, my 172 is an import registered in March 2002. The previous owners Renault dealer had no problem honouring the warranty during the 3rd year.
It was driving my parents then new 1.2 Dynamique in summer 2004 that convinced me that a 172 was for me. I thought if the 1.2 could be that good down our local lanes, then what was the proper bo model going to be like?
I had a Coup 20VT at the time, which had (although I dont agree) been...
