Funny - I went from a stainless to an OE back box. Ok, so the OE one will degrade a lot quicker, but there is definitely no drop in performance that youd notice. The only exhaust mod worth it for "power" alone is a de-cat pipe IMO.
Standard Phase1 Turbines look the nuts. Excellent wheel choice. I saw some with the original polished finish the other day... mmmm.
Cant believe they were making the Valver with 15" wheels in late 1991 - youd think the 182 would be rolling on 20s or something by now!
Rob - remember that I had sticking calipers at the rear when we met last week? You recommended the WD-40 thing to me, but I just let my garage use their own rememdy, which is basically as people have described here. It worked very well and saved me the price of new rear calipers.
Im very...
It doesnt sound like a cracking deal to me. You say it looks and drives nicely, but what about the paperwork and bills?
Id certainly consider a Williams with a touch of rust and in need of a wheel refurb (most will need this anyway), but not unless the rest of the car was 100% - and...
Theyre not 1600kg. Probably about 1050kg.
The "RSi" was the new name for the Mk2 "16V" (did no justice to the original bonnet-bulged, fat arched, rip-roaring Mk1 16V) and now its just another engine option, available in sporting Dynamique or luxury trim.
Apart from the Mk2 Ph1 and Ph2...
The stone chipping on the front only really happens when you drive fast on motorways in my experience. I did a lot of motorway driving in my old 16V and had the bonnet and bumper resprayed a couple of times.
I tend to do a lot less motorway driving these days - hence my Williams is pretty...
But what about my question???
If we accept that the Willy is that sensitive to tyre choice, what am I going to buy next month instead of the now-defunct Michelin Pilot HX???
Im probably one of the only people who have ever met BOTH BenR and King Stromba.
I think its best to treat this thread with a pinch of salt and remember that if it were in a pub, both the beer and the laughs would be flowing by now - both great minds of Cliosport understanding that they come...
:o :o :o
Look Pete, am I going to have to come round to your house and slap you one or are you going to wake up mate?? Theres no way the south Wales Cliosport posse are going to let you anywhere near some woosy BM, so get your act together man!!
I mean, can you imagine turning up to a...
On the open market Id expect youd get the £1400 or so people are talking about on here, as the car is. Trading it in, youre looking at about £500 from the dealer, who will want to slap on some new rear arches and warranty the car - before paying VAT on any profit he makes.
I could dig up my...
I used a roof rack on my 16V and now on my Williams too. I need to transport my bike around and its far better when you need the space for other people/luggage.
Even without a bike on top, it will seriously blunt the performance as the speed rises. I remember having trouble shaking off an...
To put things in perspective (and laymans terms), I had a lowered 16V and now have a standard Williams. I think Im in a good position to comment!
Theres often a confusion between "grip" and "handling". My Valver would probably grip better than the Willy (not much incidentally), but without...
My mum always used to fill her car and say it felt "better" after a fill-up, just like I feel better after a meal!
Ive never noticed any performance difference from having a full tank, but my car does seem to handle a little more solidly with 49 litres of unleaded over the rear axle.
Servicing from a specialist like Hill Power, Infinicar, Renatec or any other reputable specialst is worth more than a Renault stamp. Just think how many Williams or even 16Vs an average Renault dealer sees compared to someone like Renatec who have literally hundreds of these cars on their...
Ive always driven under about 3000rpm before the oil temp reaches about 80degC. Both the old Valver and my Willy have very helpful gauges for this. You can also use the oil pressure gauges to watch when it starts to drop in these cars.
Takes for ever with the Mk1 hot Clios to warm up...
My Williams, now with 59k on the clock, ran at just about 90degC for oil and about a 1/3 to 1/2 on coolant temperature when it had really sh*tty coolant. After a thorough flush, new coolant and a new expansion tank on Friday, its the same - no difference I can see. The heater system also...
DAI - READ THIS!!
I sold my 16V late last summer and had the cash to buy a "new" car. At the time, I wasnt sure whether to get a special car which I could put up with the bills, or just a newer hot hatch to provide reliable motoring with a bit of panache. The 106 GTi seemed to fit the bill...
I also said in the sentence before that "Just to rock the boat a little, have you considered buying a dog-eared Phase1 16V and doing a BB Tuning/GT Turbo conversion to that?"
I was talking about the 16V car, not the engine! :D
Private selling has always worked for me. Ive always had a buyer within a week and for a fair price. Also, dont underestimate the selling potential of a simple poster in the window of your car!
My cars are always cosmetically absolutely stunning and do most of the leg-work by being mint...
Just to rock the boat a little, have you considered buying a dog-eared Phase1 16V and doing a BB Tuning/GT Turbo conversion to that? No offence to the non-16V/Willy cars, but a 16V is a far better starting point for a major project like forced induction.
For starters, think of the fatter...
The standard 16V gearbox has the same ratios from 1st to 4th as the Williams, but the Willy box has a taller 5th for a higher top speed.
I would use the Willy box because it is a tougher unit over the 16V one, with bigger gears, stronger bearings, larger secondary shaft and a beefed-up casing.
There are more Willy 2 and 3s on the market if my experience is anything to go by and I was looking for a Phase2 myself back when I was buying.
The thing is that a mint Willy 1 came up and it was too good to ignore. Having now got a Willy 1, IMO theres pretty much nothing youd miss apart...
If it had mint bodywork, then it would sell for a fair price (or sell it to someone willing to do the bodywork themselves).
I for one know that most wear on the 16V and Willy relates to age rather than mileage, but you would definitely have some trouble selling it to someone who didnt know...
By the way, for anyone that saw the 182 get a review in Evo saying it might be the best hot hatch ever... make sure you have a look at the next one or two issues. Not giving any more away that that, although I can say that three forum users had a good day yesterday and today ;)
Williams: The original homologation special, 400 RHD cars, numbered individually and made in late 1993. Basically, Renaultsport took advantage of FIA Rallying rules that allowed engine capacity of up to 2.0 litres when a car was homologated (at the time, they were using the 1764cc Clio 16V as...
My Williams is the only car to which Ive actually done the reverse of modifying - Ive spent time and money getting it back to standard. Now the only thing that isnt standard on the car are some door-bottom speakers, which will go as soon as I can find some un-holed door cards.
I used to...
