The DCi is on the list (as is the 1.4 HDi for the Pug 206), but theyre a little more expensive to start with and the deals are a little less forthcoming.
Theres a local car supermarket doing the 1.2 petrol Dynamique for £8199, but no diesels in sight. Considering that the diesel is about...
I think the Polo is out of the question Rob due to the expense. I honestly dont think I can see anything extra worth paying for on a car like that, especially when it has cheaper cousins from SEAT and Skoda that are identical in most respects. VW have a problem with product differentiation IMO...
The Williams or any Mk1 Clio is a definite step towards modernity over the 205s Ive been it and to be fair theyre closer to the new Mk2 Clio interiors than the 205 is to the Mk1 Clio. Id personally argue that the newer contenders havent moved the game on from the Williams/16V, which IMO were...
I think 15s are plenty of wheel for a Mk1. Heres my old Valver lowered slightly on Phase2s:

...and my standard Williams:

The Willy and Valver dont run the same box. They do run the same ratios from 1st to 4th but are effectively shorter in the Willy due to the 6500rpm redline.
The Willy box may have greater transmission loss due to the fact that it has bigger bearings and a larger secondary shaft.
It is...
The only thing youd notice from the drivers seat of an older Phase1 Clio is the relative lack of soundproofing and the older-looking heater switches. There are other minor differences both inside and out, but if youre moving up to a 16V its all be nicer stuff than you have on your 1.2 anyway...
If the J-reg is a good price, then then its worth a punt because even if you sell it in the next few years, it will still be a low miler. It probably wont be in any better condition than the higher mileage cars, but the low miles will draw the buyers in when you come to sell (cars wear with age...
The book figure for it will be a fair bit less but I think it doesnt reflect what people pay for a 16V. Remember that finding a mint 16V is hard - especially with miles like that. Youll not find a mint 16V for anywhere near the book figures. I think Williams book figures for an A1 car are...
I today managed to sell my mums Volvo S40 and got a not entirely unreasonable £3,600 for it, which is a lot of car for the buyer considering its a 2.0 with leather, A/C, 6 CD, alloys etc.
Anyway, thats important as it sets the scene for the hunt for a new small car. It has to be new, cheap...
Phase1 16Vs all had electric mirrors, but the Williams 1 didnt (cost/weight).
Heres a quick guide for you:
Williams: The original homologation special, 400 RHD cars, numbered individually and made in late 1993 (some LHD cars were numbered under 400, so some RHD cars are numbered into the...
The 106 sounds as if it will fit the bill a lot better - a Williams would be a bit of an extreme car which wouldnt be fully appreciated by the sound of things!
The Willy 1,2 and 3 rear lip spolier is bigger and colour-coded. Otherwise no body differences, apart from no sunroof (not 3), wider tracks and different wheels.
Id agree with you about the character of the 16V versus the Willy.
Down the same twisty roads, theres no doubt that between the better suspension and wider torque band the Willy is a slightly quicker car. However, Im pretty sure that my old Valver would be a match for my Willy in a lot of...
The Dynamique is a lot closer to the 172 in terms of looks and spec than the older Mk1 Clios were to the Renaultsport 16V and Williams, but there are still quite a lot of differences, especially under the skin!
For the reference of everyone else "Holly" is my old tweaked 16V, running breathed on cams, head and an improved fuelling system. The exhaust set up is a Mongoose cat-back stainless system and a BB Tuning de-cat pipe.
Riplash - if you look closely at the fuel rail (in front of the inlet...
Ahh, youre treating Holly well I see. But really, hes used to a wash every other day and a wax about twice weekly!
Lovely car - Id buy it straight back if ever I lost the Williams. Ive gone for the standard route with the Williams and it makes me miss Holly so much.
This is my old car! Dont offend it!
It always overfuelled a bit, with puffs of black smoke quite common. Its the way its set up through the second fuel regulator (some call it a PBV) to stop it running lean with an induction kit fitted.
Id not worry since theres no catalyst fitted to...
It sounds as if your lady wants a car use to go to, from and for work purposes.
As much as the Williams is unquestionably a better hot hatch than the Ibiza Cupra, it might not be the best bet for this sort of use. Dont get me wrong - my Willy is - no joke - more reliable than my parents new...
The gearbox noise you describe is what I have on my 1993 Williams. Ive not got round to sorting it yet as I have a feeling it will be expensive, but the car has done 8,000 miles in my ownership with this noise! Comes and goes as it pleases, although its most audible at about 50mph.
Ive had...
According to Renault, the 0-60 is 7.7 (same as 16V) and top speed is 134mph.
But these figures conceal the rapido nature of the Willy. Over a set distance, the Willy will be quicker than most as it makes most of its torque at 2500rpm and has no less than 100% from 4000rpm (rare). Add the...
Nah, the Ibiza and Fabia are based on the Polo (which isnt a Focus sized car!).
Like I say, my mum hasnt got that much of an open mind when it comes to brands. Sad as it is, shed not touch a Fiesta - no matter how good!
Been out this afternoon on a spree to the dealers with my mum. My parents are downsizing their 2nd car (Volvo S40 decked out with leather etc) as they dont need a large 2nd car any more and they need to insure my 18 year old brother on a car! (they dont want him to have his own older car like...
