Thats what a 16v one looks like - mines painted mind...
I love the front bumper of the Mk1 - its a bit more muscular than the Mk2 and looks a bit more like the spawn of the 16v and Willy.
But then the Mk2 looks a lot better from the side and behind!
Id seriously consider a Mk1 in black or one of the lovely green leather-ed up, mega-rare, 172...
Mileage isnt a problem on these cars as long as all the jobs have been done. But 80k is kind of at the tail end of where things go wrong with the 16v/Willy. Like I said before, that should mean a big folder of bills if all has been seen to.
All you can do really is get an AA check and see...
My last insurance was "dirt cheap" in that it had huge excesses and excluded theft cover from anywhere except in my garage! Now that was bad. But at the time, it was by far the cheapest.
What I mean by the tail end of things going wrong is this:
By about 80k, youll find that most long-term perishable items such as the clutch, cambelt, brake discs, CVs, engine mounts and so on will have been replaced on a well cared-for Williams or 16v. If youre lucky (the previous owner...
Theres a doctor ripping around Bristol in a silver Mk1 172 - has a green light on top and "doctor" plastered all over it!
Now thats what I call a Rapid Response Unit!

Try http://www.Halifax.co.ukwww.Halifax.co.uk. They were really, really cheap for me. They wont quote you for third party, but the FC prices are mega, mega cheap.

It damn cold here. I cycled home from work at Citizens Advice and there was no ice in the town centre - as Id imagine there would be none on the M4. But its damn cold and Id take it easy, for the sake of avoiding stone chips if nothing else!

Yeah, but the Cup is not a 16v/Willy!
Anyway, I hope Ive now sourced an original airbox, so hopefully Ill be able to put this debate to bed when Ive fitted it!

Also forgot to mention that you know where your engines been, how its been driven and youve got some comeback if things go pop within a reasonable amount of time if you have it rebuilt.
I dont know how much your VTS is worth now, but Id be tempted to hang on to it. One of the area reps - Craggy - has a Williams, but also recently bought a VTS.
Hes impressed us all with its pace (with his videos) and certainly opened my eyes to the VTS.
But the Cup is in the next...
I think the performance per pound debate would be a toss-up between the GT Turbo, 205 1.9 GTi and Clio 16v for me. No doubt in my mind that the 16v is the most handsome and comfortable car of these three. Its not the most easy to work on, costs a lot of money to maintain properly and often...
I can see where BenR is coming from. Id tune the 1.8 16v lump (but then I would say that, wouldnt I!).
Having now had the privilege of driving a Willy, I can actually say that I prefer a moded 16v to it - thats just my taste. But I wouldnt prefer a standard 16v to it!
The extra power...
An IK may add a fraction of power to a 16v/Willy on the rollers - with your bonnet open and cool air being fanned on - but in the real world youll lose a bit of torque and power in circumstances where cold air is not forthcoming (e.g. around town, at low speeds, in warm weather).
Id say if...
