Evo this month has various Renaultsport cars in it. They just love Clio RS's and Megane R26R's in that magazine. Every month they mention at least one of them. In the hot hatch buyers guide the Clio RS200 cup comes out top every month. There is a back to back test between a Ph2 172Cup and the...
I still use V power or equivalent in my 172. There is a difference in the way the car performs on it. I've tried it in various cars I've had and they all ran better on 99 octane. The difference isnt so noticeable until you start driving a car really hard over a challenging road or on the track...
I've got an OMP rear strut brace on mine and Powerflex dogbone bush on the gearbox mounting. The bush does stop the exhaust whacking the floor when driven really hard but still need to upgrade the rest of the engine mountings.
The rear strut brace certainly stiffens the car up nicely and makes a...
Nice cars, shame about the driver. He didnt put them through their paces properly. Fair enough the track was damp but he couild have pushed them a bit more.
I've had my 172 for 18 months now. I bought it from a trader with no history and took a chance on it. The car had been standing for a while as it was covered in green from standing in a car park under some trees. I took it for a quick spin and just knew I wanted it. Unfortunately I didnt get a...
The rear seats are easy to take out for track days ,it only takes a few minutes The base cushions only slot in anyway so they can come out in a few seconds and be put safe. I use a rear strut brace on trackdays and if I'm going for a blast but have recently removed it to give some space in the...
Mine has been superb except it disgraced itself recently when a wire broke on the serial port connection to the ecu under the bonnet. That was due to someone prior to me having the car sticking a test probe through the insulation on the live cable, leaving a small hole for damp to get in and...
I went for a ride in one of the current Clio 200's thats being used in this years championship when I did a track day at Brands Hatch in January. It was awesome! I certainly found out a few tips for driving mine round the track.
Every issue of Evo mag raves about the 200,its comes out top against every hot hatch test they run ,no matter what the other cars are! It was in top ten of the best cars of the year as well in Evo. it even stood up to comparison against Ferraris and other exotica!
You'll love using the power of a 172 in relation to a fabia. Go for a low mileage car with all the history up to date. The car should be straight, everything matching up otherwise walk away. I get 35mpg if I take it sensibly, which isnt often! Make sure all the belts are ok if its got mileage on...
check the wiring in the serial port to the ecu isn't breaking down. My car broke down a few weeks ago. Wouldnt start but engine turned over. got an auto electrician to check it out. He came and asked my local mechanic to get the ecu off so he could have a look at it. As he was removing the...
Do not press the piston back into the caliper. They have to be wound in otherwise you will damage the caliper. You can buy a tool to wind the pistons back in. Its common on french cars for this type of piston to be used.
If you're getting new tyres get the tracking done as well as its likely to be out. Try Toyo Proxes T1-R's. Very good tyres and not expensive. Got them on mine. also got Brembo front discs and DS2500 ferodo race pads.
The V-6 airbox seems to have a large single cold air feed instead of the twin ones on the 172 'box.
I know that the guys racing in the cup challenge use the V-6 airbox with a performance filter. They also have extra pipework feeding lots of cold air into the filter.
I went out in one of the...
I tried using a 172 airbox with green cotton air filter from Demon Tweeks and the car feels slower to respond than using the cone filter. I did a track day using the standard airbox and it wasn't as good on acceleration.
I went back to using the cone filter on the end of the air filter pipe and...
Sounds like your heater matrix might be leaking. I had a Xsara that was like that before I got the clio. I got rid of it cos it was impossible to get rid of the smell of coolant and it was one of the worst cars i've ever had.
