I found a cup-style filter tool and a 600 mm breaker bar work for the first half turn off. After that a normal ratchet handle is enough.
The second time I did an oil change I overfilled by about 0.1 litres. When trying to correct this I ended up dumping about a litre on the garage floor because...
Sorry to hijack, but your pic indicated that I'm not the only person with the tin foil heat shield fallen of the firewall and melting on the headers.
Any way to fix it?
It's interesting comparing the different approaches to driver safety for street vehicles and those for motorsport such as F1. In both cases the vehicles have never been safer, but bnoth use very different approaches based on the differeing amount of kinetic energy involved.
Safety in street...
What's your braking technique? Short and hard is better than long and soft because it gives time for heat to dissipate.
Every time you go to brake, pause and think wehether you really need to. If you do need to brake you've waited a bit so brake harder for shorter time.
Little dabs on the...
If you haven’t done this already, pull out the plugs and take a look at them.
A few weeks ago I had an inspiration to degrease the engine. Next day (on a forum drive) the car ran really badly with a strong misfire. It was raining so I put it down to that. It got worse over the next 3 days. I...
I just put SRF into my 172 for occasional track days.
It’s the “wet” boiling temperature that’s most important because the fluid absorbs moisture.
The STF’s wet temperature is 270C which is higher than the dry boiling temp of most other fluids.
If the SRF is boiling then you need to look at...
Careful with normal chrome plated sockets on impact wrenches. If they break the chrome plating shatters and flies around like schrapnel.
The steel in impact sockets is softer and they are made thicker to cope with the hammering.

It’s good and can do a lot. The same database can also run on the Windows version plus with FM Go on iPhone or iPad too,
In Australia spacers are illegal unless supplied with the car OEM.
I’ve been reading up on aerodynamics and wheels are a large source of drag which is why they are recessed into the arches slightly.
Careful with stainless steel. They don’t rust but any other metal in contact, particularly aluminium, will corrode extremely quickly. As in days and weeks.
It’s a big problem with sailing boats, stainless steel fittings on aluminium spars.
Stainless often has less tensile strength than steel...
Glad it's sorted.
I was going to add that the only certain way too know whether the ending is warmed up is to hit the rev limiter. If it's >7,000 rpm, it's warm. :)
Does the speedo needle wobble about the same time the miss/surging happens? If it's a 172 non-ESP then the gearbox speedo sensor needs changing. Not hard to change, or expensive.
BTW the speedo sensor is different and separate to the TDC sensor.
If it's a 172 with ESP, they use the ABS instead...
