I saw a video once of a Clio 172 (i think) v GTI 180... the GTI 180 seemed to have better driver as it got past eventually, but on the straights, not really much in it, with a *slight* edge to the Clio.
I believe an RS could comfortably overtake the 138 bhp version but not the 180 version.
Whatever the case, I find it hard to believe some people really believe either could possibly be "a lot quicker" than the other.
There is a tiny difference.
Personally I'd say a CTR would probably edge, but we are talking about a seriously insignificant difference, not even one car length up...
Pretty much the same as most lardy turbocharged hatchbacks - low 20's... i have a mate who has a chipped Leon Cupra... apparently he sees low 30's on the motorway, but thats still pretty poor, because he doesnt really drive quick at all!
I have had a little "race" with a Monaro, think it was kicking out about 350ish bhp.... let me say, no chance, but it was still possible to keep it in sight as long as the road wasnt too long and straight.
On bendy roads though, the Clio will keep up as its that kind of car, not much really...
Especially when some of these lardy 2.0 litre turbo hatches are struggling to get much better than 20 MPG!
I've heard the Astra VXR actually struggles to get 20 MPG at all!
29.6 mine is showing. Roads vary constantly from dual carriageways, town and countryside. Hard driving style, but relatively sensible on dual carriageways.
Haha, so true, actually I've "accidentally" ended up in Scotland a couple of times just driving around there. Usually on the A68... actually theres no cameras at all on the English side of the 68, but there is loads on the Scottish side:( and some of them on in places where you would overtake...
Short of putting the proper Trophy items on, is it possible using normal springs + dampers or coilovers to give as good handling as a Trophy to a normal 182?
I am happy with the way the 182 handles, but in the future sometime, I think I would like to improve its handling (and perhaps...
I would have considered a V6 myself, but I did think it might be too expensive to run, and considering I definitely wanted a Mk2 V6 (I just like the look of them better) over the Mk1, the purchase price was out of my reach too....
Perhaps one day though I'll own one of these fantastic cars...
I really like reading your posts rory. Its nice to read about someone who actually goes out on proper roads and enjoys their car, and isnt obsessed with whether its 0.000001 second quicker than some other car.
For me these really are drivers cars. I had toyed with the idea of getting rid of...
I'm trying to work out why people feel guilty about this.
It was designed to be revved. As long as its warm, I very much doubt your causing any damage. Cars will wear out regardless. Just enjoy what you have.
For what its worth i dont bounce mine off the limiter - whats the point? I make...
The torque steer on the Clio is nothing. Try driving a powerful turbodiesel or turbo petrol and you'll know what torque steer is. My mates chipped 1.8T Ibiza spins up in third in the dry! I find the Clios power easy to put down, and that makes a very fast car off the mark.
Oh and BTW, how the hell did this conversation end up with a exclusive, gorgeous sounding and looking petrol rear engined rear wheel drive car being compared with a budget diesel warm hatch?????
Even if they are just as quick, what would you rather be driving? If you say the Fabia, then...
Once again, LMAO.
I've been in more than one remapped diesel, including a Ibiza TDI Sport 130 remapped by Jabba to 185 (allegedly as its a well known fact a lot of RR over-rate the diesels).
They FEEL fast. ANd they are very easy to drive fast without any effort because the power is so low...
It was only 55p a litre when i started! That was 9 years ago, so in a decade at this rate it'll be £2 a litre!
We'll never see days like those again. Make the most of your fast petrol hatches people, because soon they'll be the preserve of the rich.
LMAO 182 Sport, you never do shut up about Fabias.
I've owned one. I wouldnt go back.
To compare it to a V6 is very, very silly. One sounds like a tractor and is common as muck, the other is a very special car. But you just dont get it.
If you love them so much why not just buy one and...
The smaller engined clios have one advantage in their favour actually, that nobody seems to have mentioned: The engine is lighter, so the car isnt as nose heavy.
A lot of people used to say the 1.6 GTI Pug 205 was a better handler than the 1.9 for this reason, and some also used to say the...
I noticed when I was driving around in the mk3 courtesy car (a DCI) that unless you were really going for it in the RS, the mk3 was actually faster! Obviously when you rev them both out, the RS was so much quicker it was funny, but day to day on the road, the DCI felt nice and punchy and could...
To answer the original question, Corrado VR6 v Clio, there wouldnt be much in it really, the Corrado is 190 bhp but is also a lot heavier, the performance would be all but identical give or take. A lot of people w**k themselves daft about the handling of the 'rado as well, but I've spoken to a...
Actually the trophy is supposed to be less harsh and more forgiving of the poor road surfaces in this country, a lot more compliant than the standard cup suspension, but also lacking roll around the corners.
As good as the 205 is, I'm not sure a standard one would outhandle a trophy.... maybe...
