Same as Martin, tie rods (inner track rods / track rods) but not the track rod ends were to blame, tightened up the handling and made it feel like new again.
Esp in possil are brilliant, did my 205s speedlines, my motorbike wheels and several others for mates, work etc.
15s powder coated should be no more than 180quid
2 years on the 172 is going strong, currently on 69,977miles, just MOT'd it today, one advisory for osf track rod end.
For anyone considering a 172 as a daily runner here's a run down of what I've done to keep this mechanically tip top:

How do you know the shocks aren't gubbed? Check rears for leaks. Clios need front wheel tracking only rear isn't adjustable, £35-40 and worth doing anyway after changing suspension.
Hold the button on the end of the stalk as you turn the key but without starting the car, then press the button to cycle through the information and it'll tell you how many litres are in the tank.
