Renault Leicester have tried a similar trick with me by not replacing my pollen filter at 24000 miles, they stated over and over that it didnt need doing every 12000 miles and that was after looking on their computer etc..., so I pulled out the service book, that stated the pollen filter should...
The Climate Control on my 172 was playing up in that selecting the various air outlet buttons was not redirecting the air flow, may be worth trying out. The fix on mine was to fit a new Climate control computer.
The airbag and service lights coming on is a common fault, its the connector under the passenger seat. Renault Leicester fixed this fault on mine by removing the connector and soldering the wires together, been fine ever since.
Chris.
dannyh172, that pinging is just the exhaust cooling down.
My theory is that the quality of the 172 exhaust (centre section) is very poor. I think its a bit of a hit and miss affair if you get one without the 4k buzz. To cure my 4k buzz they fitted a new centre section, that was 6000 mikes ago...
Just read this article on the 4car website:

This is the bit that made me laugh: "Renault is also to use more laser-welding, and plans to cut its...
Ian,
Mine makes that noise as well, although Ive not bothered to have it looked at. There is a little fan in the plastic bit that holds the interior lights. It sucks air through the small vents across a temperature sensor for the climate control.
Chris.
Scudetto, I recon thats it. Take this morning for instance, took the car out of the garage, started first time. After about 3 miles stopped at a petrol station. On the first attempt at starting, the engine was just turning over but wouldnt fire. Second attempt it fired straight away. Now even...
On a few occasions my 172 Mk2 wont start first time, but will usually start on the second attempt.
I always make sure I wait until the dash lights go out until I turn the key to the starter position.
I know a few people have had this problem, but has anybody had it sucessfully fixed so that it...
I recon that the centre section of the exhaust isnt very good quality, I mean my 4k rattle was happening from brand new, the new centre section cured it, but it looks like even some of the new centre sections may be faulty?
Thats definately the 4k rattle. When I drove my 172 for the first time I too thought it was coming from the dashboard. After a few trips to the dealer with them tightening the heat shield/replacing heatshield bolts they finally fitted me a new centre exhaust section which has cured the problem.
The Renault Sport factory in Dieppe doesnt look particularly big, so I would imagine for them to produce the Megane RS something is going to have to give, i.e. the Clio 172?
Just my theory.
Chris.
Mine split/came unstuck 2 months ago when the car was 18 Months old (with 26,000 miles on the clock) and Renault Leicester replaced the whole steering wheel under warranty. I didnt pay a penny.
Things I can think of to check for are:
1. Rattle/buzz at 4000rpm (very common fault)
2. Missing headlight washer balls
3. Dodgy paintwork, i.e. overspray, rust spots etc.
4. Water ingress through rear wheel arch (check under rear seat)
5. Rattle from passenger seat runner.
Noticed on http://www.mytyres.co.ukhttp://www.mytyres.co.uk today that they are selling the new Continental SportContact 2 tyres. Anyone tried these on their 172 and if so found them to be better/worse than the standard Continental SportContact tyres.
Chris.
172Uk, if you mean the rubber inserts on the steering wheel, I had the same problem, the right hand side one came unstuck and then split. Renault Leicester fitted me a brand new steering wheel under warranty. Car is 18 Months old and has 26,000 miles on it.
Chris.
The oil level sensor is in the sump, once you start the engine the oil will start to be pumped around and so the reading will drop. To get an accurate reading, always check with the engine off and if it has been running, give it a few minutes for the oil to drain back into the sump!
I think if you run a 172 on 95 ron it has a tendancy to pink more (detonate) in which case the knock sensor would detect this and r****d the ignition. By running on 98 ron or higher would cause less pinking. Correct me if Im wrong?
Chris.
I recon the reason why more problems seem to occur with 172s/V6s/cups is that they are built in a different factory to the other clio models. They are built at the alpine/renaultsport factory in Dieppe. Photos of the factory that I have seen show it to be rather low tech .
Chris.
Had the 4k rattle/buzz, centre section of exhaust replaced under warranty (car is 18 months old with 25,000 miles on it), rattle/buzz has now gone. They tried to fix it 3 times previously by messing around with the heatshield, replacing various bolts etc but it persisted until the new mid...
