Aux belt on a 172 has too work very hard - dont mess with it. I check mine every month. A while back a small piece of it broke away found its way into the cam cover, lifted the cambelt on the crank and smashed all my valves.
Did it myself over £500 in tools and bits.
5 years back I couldnt start the car - AA guy tried all sorts and in the end it started. Took to Renault - after a day they phoned me up asked about a spare key I used that and it was good until Sunday.
Sunday key fob would not activate central locking so opened the door but this did not...
Mines gone too - second time as well after 5 years. My problem is the cheap nylon guide that snaps. Just now removed the panel and found the nylon piece in the door. Checking the site for the size of the bolt that goes through the window (think its 8mm)
This site is great - its a simple clip...
Alpine CD changer model A42 Clio 172 year 2001
Model C9RN81ZC...........
CD cartrdge loads up, cd gets pulled into mechanism and then...... nothing.
Green button rejects cartridge OK - loads and then... nothing.
Any ideas can you fix these things?
Model C9RN81ZC...........
Pushed in cartridge and cd's wouldnt load properly, lots of buzzing and then nothing. unit would not unload cartridge and a cd got trapped halfway into the cd player part. So I removed the unit and stripped down to get the cartridge out and then found a bit of card...
I made the tool with a square drive to take the tension to get the belt on easy. Bit of flat bar with a square welded on. Without it you can damage the plastic spools / idlers

Dear...
Spent £600 with Renault to fix a dodgy auxiliary belt which took out my cambelt - lifted head etc...
Oil provided by Renauly was Solaris DPF which prides itself on particulate filters er aint that Diesel talk? Second time I asked again (same dealer) for 172 oil and got Evolution SXR which is...
Job now complete and car running fine. (I built in in the road - busy job long winter.
Many thanks to all those that helped (Fred you a star) its been an interesting job. I have learned that;
auxiliary belts are a pain and that they can fail at 25k
setting camshaft needs care -it is possible...
First time start today for me too...(since last september) however I connected the battery +ve first, pressed the red button, pressed the lock then opened and it started first time. (need a bit of luck after £600 in bits due to an auxialiary belt)
Fuel in exhaust is no wrries unless its so...
Re: PH1 172 mystery pipe ??????????
Heres a picture of the mystery pipe alongside the one from the thermostat cover to header bottle - as you can see it is a shade longer but it would fit. The one fitted has a covering I guess to protect it should the airintake rub on it. Clearer picture of...
the pipe fitted is OK but you have me thinking...
The pipe off the car does not smell of oil so it could be the header pipe. Is there a similar pipe that has clips at the ends which goes somewhere else? I will remove am tomorrow and see if the pipe is a better fit.
wheres it go;
car failed last september - run tonight no water leaks but havn't connected up all the air system yet but a bit confused over the pipe?
Save me having to crawl over the engine if someone would tell me where to look.
My aux belt lost a small 1/16th peice 7inches long into the cam cover enough to let the belt slip (didnt snap). My tensioner wheel got damaged (lost a small section)because I released the spring rather than use a 3/8 drive to take up the tension.
Tensioner wheel assembly £130 however dealer...
Oooohhh, dont say that spent me Saturday under the car, buying a torx socket, working out how to juggle the pump up and out of the car, and fitting a new one after paying City Motors £60-43p+vat for the privilige and all because the threads say change it at 60K miles...
I had a once per rev wheel clic that turned out to be the brake anti squeal plate. Also drivers side has all the auxiliaries such as air con pumps they can click but as the noise is only when uner motion it wont be that..
Whats the auxiliary belt look like? Mine lost a small piece which went under the Cambelt cover and wrapped around the crank which let the belt jump a tooth (~18 degrees out) - bye bye valves....

Looking tools for an F4R are the Mot 1801 which also fits other Clios plus the cog from a Mot 1509-1 with a wider shoulder for the exhaust pulley.
Tool on Ebay sets the Cams - Renault number is Mot 1496, and the pins lock the crankshaft.
Does the Clio 172 waterpump gaskets need any sealer? The gaskets fixed well to the pump face so I assuming yes.
Its well fixed so was going to use the Renault blue stuff - is that right?
Look for emusified oil in the sump oil or do a pressure leakdown check on the head to check a gasket. Also you can get water in the cylinders so the plugs should let you know the health of the engines
