Alarm the car with the windows down, wont be long before it goes off.
Dead give-away that the alarm is installed is that there are sensors at the top of the front pillars and a led fitted near the cig lighter.
Also, if you turn the ignition on/off twice before alarming the car it will...

My dash is getting worse. Im going to remove it myself as I want to fit tweeters and ill fix those damn rattles. Might smear grease or something around the edges to prevent more occuring?
Renault do have a small leyway(sp?) but 1.5K miles is quite a bit so maybe. Though mine was done at around 10.5K as I was heading off to Europe.

If its a UK car it will also be covered by Renault Assistance (AA) for 3 years - its the car thats covered not the owner so its transferable like the warranty.

Will be removing it again to fit some tweeters when I decide what to get. I might leave the grills on tho as its a nice flush finish.
I think the fact that it limited to 40mph was that it went into "limp" mode, this is when the ECU detects something wrong and therefore prevents you doing more damage. Might be worth getting Renault to plug it into the diagnostics and see if all is well.
I had a similar thing (was travelling...
