Hmm, think you might be onto a loser here Dave mate. There are a LOT of Mk2s 172s on the road. I would hazard a guess that the Mk1 172 could be the rarest of the 172 incarnations. Incidently, the model of Clio which has sold the fewest numbers of the recent range is the 1.6 16v. Which makes...
If were talking modded (which is pointless!!) What about Roamers Clio 212?? think it might come out tops somehow.....
Standard vs Standard (as in out of the box, not standard "apart from decat, zorst and filter" as most seem to quote) the 172 is quicker in a straight line than the Williams.
The Williams is a fantastic handling car. But would it beat a 4wd car through the twisties? Not sure. Depends how twisty the twisty bits are I suppose and how big the drivers balls are.
Not too bad, considering the 0% finance. Renault offered me £9500 for my 172 against a 182 (with Spoilers, paint and suspension) for £14,500 with the £5000 on 0%. I politely told him where to stick it.
Id like to have a drive in a 182 with a few more miles on the clock to see if there really is a difference (Im sure there will be, its lighter and has more power!!). As I said earlier, the 182 I drove felt quite a bit slower than my 172, but I guess it was still a bit tight.
Handling stakes -...
The 182 I drove was slower than my 172:o. (had less miles on it though - 10000 vs 2000) Was a dealer demo car. For me, coming from a mk2 172, the biggest difference was in the handling....... 182 with Cup pack is far superior to 172 imho.

IT A f**kING FORUM!!! ITS NOT REAL LIFE!! If reading some of the posts on here (and there are dickheads that post on here, dont get me wrong) has made you "not want anything to do with" clios, you are indeed a shallow and sad person. Get a f**king life ffs!!
You wont go far wrong with a Williams mate, provided you can find a good one. Ive been looking at one for a second car and there are some real dogs out there.... You may have to wait a while for good one to come along a a decent price as they still demand a premium (and rightly so).
PS - 172...
