Does the noise happen when the car is just idling? Like if you sit on the driveway and rev to 3k? A way to check for exhaust blowing, is to have the car running, get a big lump of rag and cover the exhaust pipes. The pressure should build up if the exhaust is fine and well sealed. If not...

Mine made it to 105k. Benp's gearbox/clutch guide was top notch with taking mine out.

Happened to me too. one of the bearings in the gearbox disintegrated... Get the box off asap..

I'd be tempted to drive another Gti-6. The one I've driven felt awesome around corners. Better than my 172, really. All down to personal preference though!

106 has the same rear suspension setup as the 306. As for the Williams being 'ragged', bullshit. They'll be driven as hard as any other hot hatch, it's just they're slightly older.

Unlucky, and fair f**king play to the fella who left his details. Accidents happen, and it would've been all to easy for him to leave your car like that and he would've probably never been seen again. Top man, imo.

I'm not sure on a 172, but on my old car, i just whacked loads of old rag around it, to soak up any leaking petrol, and undid. Worked fine.

More than possible. That'd rule the gearbox out (which is good news). Possible wheel bearing? Or driveshaft? I'd have it jacked up and check all the wheels for play. Any movement that shouldn't be there would point the finger at the wheel bearings.

Hair dryer? Razor blade? White spirit? Watch the metal lines from the heated screen with the blade, though!

If it was cambelt related, it would make a noise all the time. Even when being rev'd at a stand-still.

If the noise persists with the clutch down, i'd be looking towards wheel bearings/driveshafts etc. If it goes away, it's coming from the 'box or clutch.

And it doesn't make a noise when you put the clutch down? If not, that rules out wheel bearings and driveshafts.
