    Jon's Trackday PH1 172 project thread

Re: Jon's trackday MK1 172 project thread Yes mate, have a read back, it's the red one. Not got a welder here so going to try bashing a socket over it!

    Jon's Trackday PH1 172 project thread

Re: Jon's trackday MK1 172 project thread I had some time today and have a full day tomorrow so looking forward to cracking on. Decided to start getting the interior ready for the cage to go in even if it might not be for a few weeks yet. I'd only removed the seats so I had a reasonable amount...

Not really, tended to be stamped on the later cars and the Cups.

    Definative bottom end torque settings

I wouldn't say it's stupid. Renault have made a fair few F4R's with a fair few standard bolts that have lasted pretty well. Sure I'd love a set, but i'm not spending £80 on them.

    Definative bottom end torque settings

I think the bolts only need to be changed if out of tolerance levels though? And I've no plans to rev to 9k just yet so standard bolts are staying for the timebeing as the ARP bolts are a few ££

    Definative bottom end torque settings

Big ends actually appear to be: 25N.m +110 degrees +/- 6 degrees

    Definative bottom end torque settings

Hi guy's, is this info correct? Main bearings: Stage 1 (20nm), stage 2 (62 degrees +/- 4 degrees) Big Ends: Stage 1 (20nm), stage 2 (40 degrees exactly). Are replacement bolts essential, or can I get away with the old ones?

    Jon's Trackday PH1 172 project thread

Re: Jon's trackday MK1 172 project thread It was knocking pretty bad before we took it all apart, least it was obvious why now!

    Jon's Trackday PH1 172 project thread

Re: Jon's trackday MK1 172 project thread I know, that's a picture Marcus sent me last night. :( Told him not to scratch them, but I'm going to buy a can of red paint just in case, as I suspect they'll be a few marks.

    Jon's Trackday PH1 172 project thread

Re: Jon's trackday MK1 172 project thread I'm working from home this week but Dad has some spare time so he's been fiddling with bits engine related. Just got this through: Hello, Got the new torx socket today so I took of the sump. The inlet for the oil pump was full of swarf and a broken...

What stuff to use to seal the end cap bearing?

On the internet someone is suggesting ‘RTV Sealant’ which is a 2 part rubber type mix, but what is the best stuff to use thats readily available? Ta

    Jon's Trackday PH1 172 project thread

Re: Jon's trackday MK1 172 project thread So after the problems of earlier in the week I asked online what the best way forward was. I had varying reponses along the lines of dropping the driveshafts out and lifting the gearbox and bottom end out at the same time. This probably was the best way...

Removing engine block. Which is the best way?

Hi Fred: Worked a treat Ben!

Removing engine block. Which is the best way?

Cheers Ben. Yeah i've got a spare bottom end on the bench already so we've got an idea of the weight of the thing. There is two of us doing it so we'll be able to lift it out. If this is sucessful then ill start to wonder whether it's possible to put the new engine in without removing the box...

Removing engine block. Which is the best way?

Gotcha. Thanks. I wish i'd taken the day off and spent the day under the car rather than sitting at a desk!

Removing engine block. Which is the best way?

Ben, is the lower subframe mount you speak of the dogbone mount? I thought it might be possible to take it all out in bits - we're going to buy a hoist anyway - but I might give that a go this evening. Thank you.
  20. jon_r

Removing engine block. Which is the best way?

I'm now typing in 'engine hoist' rather than 'engine crane' and it's a lot cheaper, so might keep an eye on a few and get one.

Removing engine block. Which is the best way?

It's a shame you're so far away Fred otherwise i'd take you up on that mate. Cheers though, it is appreciated. A local company will do it for £30 a day, so hopefully one or two days will be fine.

Thanks mate, going to be making plenty more mistakes along the way, but ho hum, gives these boy's something to do helping me sort it ;)

Removing engine block. Which is the best way?

I've been looking on ebay. Seem to be about £250, so i'll be hiring then!

Removing engine block. Which is the best way?

I'm learning, i'm learning! I'll get there (eventually)! I'm going to take the pulleys off of this block, get it out and then remove the box and shafts seperatly afterwards. Then i'll build up the new engine, attach the box to it and then hire a crane to put it all back in in one go. I might...

Removing engine block. Which is the best way?

That kind of defeats the whole object of the project Fred. We'll get there eventually, there's no rush. Plus it's cheaper. lol.
  26. jon_r

Removing engine block. Which is the best way?

Only problem is we don't have access to a crane, so will have to look for alternative ways to complete the same task, unless I hire one for a few days I guess. Thanks chaps.
  27. jon_r

Removing engine block. Which is the best way?

So taking it all out through the top would mean the subframe could stay in place I assume?
  28. jon_r

Removing engine block. Which is the best way?

I was trying to avoid removing the gearbox, driveshafts etc etc - you're all saying there is no other way? I think with the pulleys removed it'll come out with it in place, but I take on board the point about lining the clutch up. Bugger.
