As said it needs the dash top off to get at it, and it runs to the right hand side of the dash, and down under the carpet. It's easy enough don't worry :)
You should really remove the pulleys, but it will come off if you get violent lol (I did that one of my scrap F4R's I have, just got a bit violent with it and the top comes off complete with cams and pulleys)
I tihnk you will need to be doing a whole lotta explaining to get my head around it :o lol

The best advise I can give is become a member - it's only £12 and it will give you access to all the info you need, but as a very basic check list:
Cambelt needs doing every 72k OR 5 years which ever comes first - this needs to be done by someone with the correct tools and...
If water gets into the horn it can rust up inside - remove it, fill it with WD40 and hit it with a hammer a lot - then plug it back in, get someone to hold the horn button on and keep hitting it until it comes back to life or your arm gets too tired.
If that doesn't work then new horn time
I can recommend Eibach from personal experince mate, they are progressively wound so you still keep comfort and it's more firm when pushing on - Sportlines will give about a 25-30mm drop
Can be a combo of a few things mate, I'd imagine if you whacked something it could have made the fracture worse but they will rust and fail at some point
If you can't use it its best to fill it right up with fuel so moisture can't collect in the fuel tank and rust, put the car on axle stands if you can to keep the weight off the suspension and bushes, if axle stands are no good then pump up the tyres to 50 plus psi to aviod flat spotting them...
Main reason why a shaft knocks is lack of grease on the cv joint - IMO not safe to be driven in anger as worst case sinario is it breaks and locks up - actually happened to me with my first 172, had a split cv boot without realising, started knocking and I ignored it and it locked up on the way...
