Its runnig cool but I wouldn't worry to much atleast its holding some heat lol.
The thermostat is easy to change, I've never changed one on the 1.2 16v but its more then likely located at the cyclinder head end of the top hose.
I explained earlier in the thread the process of changine one too...
Just had a quick browse over a few pages, what a stunning little example of little vtr!
I had one of these as me first car years ago an this certainly rekindles old memories. Keep up the good work an makesure you supply us guys with plenty of updates an pictures :)
I had a similar problem on my old 172 after first fitting my old gaz golds, turned out one of the springs hadn't seated properly.
How old are theses? have you contacted Gaz?
I always liked these, big fan of team dynamics stuff (had a couple of sets of 1.2's). Very similar to the compomotives are these, plans of dropping it?
To be honest mate, I'd take the thermostat out an boil it up in some water see if it functions correctly.
If no then put a new one in with some fresh coolant. If I was to look at the car I could quickly diagnose it no doubt but I'll do my best on here for you.
If its not the thermostat you...
Yep your right there, I enjoy it so much more mate.
I only do the work I want to do an I get more time to look into detailed an complex jobs as I'm not rushing to try an make bonus haha.
Having the unit is great for storage too, an we got a four poster in there :)
I got to laugh chip, I must admit when I turned up for my first block of training with Volvo I felt over educated haha. Most the lads had rarely attended school an I sat there giving all me a-c grades out an they looked amazed haha.
I've since moved on up into rail, more money, better job...
Yep been in the trade 8 years, did me apprenticeship with Volvo themselves level 3 nvq. Worked for various dealers in the midlands an on many makes an models an I also have all the correct genuine timing tools for this job. I'm not doubting your skill an tbh I am not really bothered what you do...
if its sitting under the halfway mark on the gauge its more then likely over cooling an the stat could be stuck open.
I take it its sitting there all the time
Exhaust Manifold proberly not, plus the 197 manifold includes a pre car in the downpipe. Looking at the mwm thread an you will see they have included in the inlet manifold in there build.
Not sure what work this involves, but I'm sure if you ask chip or the mwm guys who have fitted it an run...
Light red to dark red? If its running fine now just leave it for the time. As long as its not over heating an you have no loss of fluids I wouldn't worry. If the fault persists again then dig deeper
So its running at normal temp now? (halfway/smidge above)
As for the fan I rarely find they cut in, especially in this weather unless in heavy traffic that is.
You may have managed to do it this time but does it mean its right? Manufactures instructions are there for a reason, also how did you torque it up?
Yeah it would be nice to see them availible again, I spoke to james when there were first on display at fcs a few years ago back when I had my ph2 172.
Really is a nice looking product, looks quality an seems to be giving good results even on standard managment especially now you guys are...
It'll effect your fuel economy as the engine will not be getting up to optimun tempreture, also the fact it will be constantly getting hot then cold again isn't the best really as the constant tempreture change can have effect on materials over time.
I think a thermostat is no more then 16quid...

I remember a friend of mine was running a 440hp t series rover engine in his zr with je pistons fitted, one thing I noticed they were quite noisy when cold (sounded as if they were slapping!) but once warm quiet as a mouse!
Thats an ideal car for a lot of people on here, perfect compromise between performance and drivability.
When you say forged pistons won't handle big mileage why is that? Do they wear quicker themselves or cause more wear to the engine itself?
yeah it really opened it up, not many people have put the abf in the mark one as obtaining an exhaust manifold that fits is expensive or hard work the kr conversions are much more popular.
