i don't think it's going to be the servo - you would definitely notice that the pedal was much stiffer if it were.
it sounds as though you'd be best off starting by having a really good look at the hydraulic system - start at the master cylinder and follow each pipe to each wheel, check the...
from your initial description, i wondered if it might be servo related (which would give a very stiff pedal) or master cylinder failure (which would give you a very soft and completely ineffective pedal)
master cylinder seems a candidate but you might expect the pedal to feel different to...
if you were put off the Caterham because of the exposure (it does feel as though you're sat up in a casket!), you might enjoy the Elise more. they're well within your budget. worth trying one out anyway
if you're looking to spend Trophy or even 197 Cup money on a track/week end only car, i'd go for a s/hand Caterfield - fhook sight more interesting than a Clio!
^cheers; looking at between £100-200ish if it's an end cover off job or £700+ for a reconditioned box, fitted. obviously not the best time of year for it and it's doubly inconvenient as i start a new job week after next and need the car for it.
i'll give it this chance but, given some of the...
still got that other thing to sort; Renault Tech have apparently advised that it's not detrimental so that's helping for the moment!
i'll post details once this gearbox thing is sorted - might also be useful to those using search
^thanks for that
G'Road Gearboxes took it away today; they've said they'll remove the end cover to see what they can see before deciding whether or not the box needs to come out
does seem v poor. don't know what Janspeed are like but some of the other stainless exhaust manufacturers are less than interested in warranty claims.
does the warranty say anything about corrosion? worth a go anyway IMO
^yes, usually.
i don't mean to seem patronising but it doesn't sound as though you've much experience in the ways of the spanner; it might be best to be sure you've safely renewed the front discs and pads and bedded them in before attempting to bleed the fluid
ah - sorry - i was assuming Clios were cable drive. i don't know but guess it might not be necessary to remove/dismantle the binacle in that case - although it certainly is for mechanical speedo correction.
i had the same problem in a past car but never got round to sorting it properly - someone recommended a company called Speedy Cables of Islington/London but i couldn't tell you how much they charge - might be worth a quick call once the break is over - their number will come up if you Google...
i'm assuming something must have failed to have allowed one of the gears to slip - is it just a case of 'popping it back on again' or would the box need a rebuild?
^ i've caught bits of your story - real nightmare!
what was the diagnosed failure on yours; similar symptoms? and how does your £1k breakdown?
.
Justin - thanks for that; have made a mental note
i've been careful to drive around the gearbox, having been aware of its reputation from the outset. i've no way of knowing how its previous owners treated it though - just unlucky i guess
^ i think so too; i've read a bit about the fact that they're weak and haven't been at all impressed with the shift action but i was rather hoping it would have lasted me more than 6 months!
i've actually been underneath it to have a good look whilst someone shifts the lever through the gears and the linkage and the rod coming from the box are moving normally (although it won't fully engage 3rd, 4th or 5th) - the odd thing is that reverse, 1st and 2nd do actually appear to be...
the engine did cut out and i couldn't restart it initially as it took me a couple of goes to twig that it was locked in gear.
it will start with the clutch depressed but is immobile as it stalls as soon as you let the clutch out. now i think about it, it must actually be stuck in one of the...
