depends how and when it started really. highly unlikely to be timing if it's been running well before, but if it's had work done (ie cambelt) and that's when it started, then it's more than likely. However, feeling like a limiter sounds like a spark strength problem, could be battery, alternator...

Had similar on a 182 recentlt, and ended up having to cut and weld the back end of the cat pipe off as it had a big hole

RON does effect lambda reading actually, although it's only to a small degree.
Ignition timing will also effect the fuel required as it changes efficiency.

it makes a lot of difference to modern ecu's like the 197's. There are a series of target tables that the ecu uses to learn long term trims from, this keeps learning and relearning as conditions change to make the job of the lambda sensor quicker (ie get the target fueling closer to perfect so...

I don't think the 2 are even comparable for noise. I drove a car round the yard in front of the owner the other day, he was blushing like hell at how loud the JP was. I only got into 2nd at about 2k
