easiest thing to do would be interupt/extend the heater matrix hose that connects behind the thermostat and just loop it round so it goes onto the exchanger, then off again and onto the stat housing.
sensors are known to be a little prone to breaking. Thermostat is still well worth replacing, should be done every couple of years really, yet most have never been touched from new
