Tappets are not causing the tapping. Dephaser won't be causing the grinding and the belt will not cause you any tapping either. The dephaser pulley will be worn.

You don't have to change the belts, but they have to come off anyway, so it'd be worth it

I had the same problem. It went away, but comes back every other month. I put it down to just being french.

Definately alignment. Get it laser aligned. -1 degree of negative camber on the front and 0.01/2 degrees of toe in should fix it.

Yep the person whose policy it is has to make the claim. Regardless of whether or not the main driver was driving, it is claimed through their insurance policy. You best trust the people you put on as named drivers
