I just did this when I chopped the 1.6 in against the 172, was a pain in the arse but its a far better idea on the whole.

Used hammerite silver smooth on mine and had no problems with the paint flaking through heat.

Silver looked good on the my old black 1.6.

Swapping to cable can be done but I think you have to go to standalone management.
