Sounds to me like the spring clip in the selector hub has failed and is stopping you selecting a gear. Easy fix with the box out tbf, but it depends on what you find when you open them up. Search my name and you'll see I know quite a lot about the good old jc5!! Lol

I've only ever bought 1 shim kit per shaft and one for the diff mate.

They do a shim kit for the input shaft and the mainshaft mate. They also do one for the diff. I couldn't tell you if there's a 1.22mm thick shim in there, but I imagine it would be.

There's a variety of different size shims in that kit to add preload to the shaft/bearings mate

That looks very similar to what the Vauxhall xe's used to do and pass oil from the breather into the inlet mate. Then it was burnt off through the combustion cycle creating the batman esque smoke screen.
