i was thinking of taking the block out so that I could take it to a machine shop for honing - makes the cambelt easier too
but if a novice can hone a block, i'll give that a go
i'll need ring compressors too wont i? :S
so, to recap!
whip engine out
whip the head off
sump off
crank out
pistons out
take loads of photos for you lot of the bores
if they're not completely fucked, get them honed (where/how much?)
buy new piston rings
'refitting is the reversal of removing'
waaaaaaaaaaaadadadada and get...
I used about 5L of oil in 200 miles - it's not acceptable to keep driving it imo
other block, the bearings would be knackered as the crank was bent!
so gutted that this has happened, i specifically bought it so that i wouldnt have this grief! :(
77 01 472 823 PISTON RINGS £34.92 <- that sound...
got in contact with the ben and he's offered me 2 choices
1) take the lump out and return it for a refund
2) repair it and he'll give me some cash
which i think is more than fair!
So i think i'll take the block out over the weekend, take the head off and take lots of lovely pics for you lot...
just done a compression test on the engine
it made 160-165 psi, same as when i built it (previous bottom end made 195)
put a drop of oil in and it made just over 200
so, piston rings. great, looks like i was sold a duf. again.
the fuel pump on the 172 mk1 failed on the way home from FCS :(
it's a mk1 ph1 effort, so 1.2 bar i think - is this adequate for a 172?
also, does anyone know what the ph1 172 fuel rail runs at? - just wondering if my performance issues could be down to a weak fuel supply?!
i was most likely the one inside looking sorry for himself. sat next to cliolord, whos car blew up the previous morning :(
the top of the engine looks a mess :o - the underneath looks minto though :D
was good seeing beanie/moo there, and wayne i think!!
she made it to FCS!!
did a bit of brapppp on the track
and then
on the M1 at about 20mph when it started to surge. few minutes later the fuel pump packed up :(
might also explain the poor performance? - it was as quick as a williams only down the straights :(
also...
and this is...
diesel box has sensible 1-3 ratios - 3rd is 100mph
coupled with a light car, it shouldnt cause any issues :D
as for the blowing out the oil filler hole, i had a feel today (oo err) and there was a *slight* breeze if u held ur hand directly over it - is that normal?
I'll be at FCS and i think...
im *fairly* sure the cambelt is fitted right... would the correct way to check be to lock the crank at TDC and check the alignment of the cams?
it seemed fine when i had it out - did it by the book :o
i'll try the filler cap thing tomorrow
the clutch slip is my fault - i've converted to the 172 'soft clutch' and I trimmed the pedal stop a bit too much, so the bite is really high and its throwing me off :o
induction is a standard airbox and filter + with the airfeed pipes missing, but it...
