Right, thought my clutch went at the weekend but apparently its the gearbox which will cost a lot to get repaired so im looking at a cheaper solution to get it fixed and last long enough to get rid of it.
Basically i want to know what other gearboxes would fit a 1.8 16v? E.g secondhand 1.4...
Speedo was reading 10mph when i was being towed and we were defo going faster. This would have been about the speed i was going when i lost drive......
Heh - just had to suffer the embarrasment of being towed the 30 odd miles to the garage by my sisters 172 as well!
Ive really had enough of it now....its a shame because i really enjoy the car but its been one thing after another since i got it. Apparently the clutch is still under warranty...
...driving into my parents housing estate yesterday - changed down and totally lost drive! Theres still tension in the cable but i cant get any gears - even just pushing the gear lever into position with the engine off. :( Its only been 5k since it went in as well....
Does this sound about...
Ah got you!
I take it adjustment is fairly straightforward and what sort of period would they need adjusted at (yearly/half-yearly)?
Going by what kent say, a 300degree profile will fairly excentuate the 16v power delivery (hefty kick after 5000rpm) which would be nice! Not really bothered...
Been told that too.
Ive currently got 270s (fast road) in mine and was thinking about swapping them out for something else when i get the head gasflowed. The way i see it is that youve got to push the 1.8 hard to shift anyway so may as well go the whole way! 300s would give a fair increase in...
have to put money on a driveshaft (c/v joint) - with me i thought it was my tyres rubbing on the arche liners (similar noise) then ended up forking out for 2 new driveshafts.....nae cheap! Check you engine mounts at the same time - if theyre fcuked then theyll be increasing wear....
yeah thats what i was thinking about as my bonnet is quite badly chipped from being up too many arses (cars that is!) and ive got the usual arche work but apart from that everythings ok.....
think ill phone about for a few quotes....
Erm...yeah but it needs chipped to handle the 2ltrs.
I dont know if you can get away with it for a short while though (i.e if you want to fire the 2ltr up using the 1.8 chip for testing etc)....
Colin, as said above itd be too expensive to do (id reckon well over 1500 by the time youve sourced all the parts but then theres labour) so its not really worth it. If youre that despirate for more power then what about a 1.6 16v conversion? I dont know for sure but id suspect thatd be slightly...
Dont think theres any difference between the two - maybe different models/timing but not quality - theyre both reputable! As for prices, have a look at k-tecs site or phone hp for prices....
Think both HP and K-Tec use Piper cams. The ones that K-tec offer are 270s and 285s i think (both fast road) but if i remember correctly Nick said that he was getting idling probs with the 285 so they just use the 270s in their stage 2 package....
OK, my valver has done 130k and although its a fantastic car, i still feel that theres something lacking! Ive always wanted a 5 turbo so before im relegated to having the 16v forever due to money spent im thinking of selling..... What do you think i would get (bear in mind i live in Aberdeen!)...
Cheers m8! As i said, im thinking of getting the head and flywheel fitted as an alternative to the 2ltr bottom end and because it may be cheaper - will i really notice that much extra power in doing so and in what way (more kick at 4500rpm)?
Has to be said, i do like the kick that the valver...
Still weighing up whether to go for a 2ltr conversion so im wondering if tuning the 1.8 would be more rewarding....and cheaper! Err...i should know this by now i think
2ltr conversion should give me about 30bhp extra but if i worked my 1.8 whatd be a likely power/output? Currently it...
Just seen some yank site banging on about these thing - basically just an alloy, lightened item to turn the alternator belts etc slower....
Would there be any real gains in this? Surely if these belts are turned lower then the engine has more ooomph.....??
Opinions!
