Could be a number of things like plugs/ht leads/coil pack or lamda sensor on the CAT. I had similar problems which almost* made me an expert on the subject lol. I'd recommend that if your BF is a mechanic plug it into a diagnostic machine to see if he can pin point the porblem before replacing...
