0-62 Speed

  LY R27

Hi all,

Fitted the Itg replacement filter and changed the oil (silkolene) at 4,000 miles. Then tested this "mistical theory" that the cup can hit 70 in 2 gear. I thing this is a load of crap!

Mine hits the limiter at 66 and thats with the new filter, by the way the new filter does inprove throttle responce.

For information the Cup does actually hit 145mph (watch out 172 owners!)

Any thoughts?

My cup actually hits 68 when its very warm not 70 like I originally posted, but its still good and yeah the 145 is accurate thanks for confirming that mate!

Cupsize,

Did your cup have any thing left after reaching 145mph, mine had a little left?

Are you thinking of any additional mods?

Dont know - u could wait for the temperatures to drop or a big gust of back wind but Id reckon not much more and that was a once of - wont be doing that again...................It wasnt on the limiter though so it has got a bout 500more revs but most cars never tend to reach the limiter in top gear - read evo this monthh about their 200mph excursions!

:) Couldnt resist sorry.

PS. Whats it like doing an emergency stop at 145 in a Cup? Does it feel like the end is near? or do you have no worries. If it brakes well, I may make a Cup my next car.

err.. I have also done 145-146 in my 172 so why do 172 owners have to watch out ?

Are Cups supposed to have shorter gearing or somthing ?

oh and dash... err. ye but the 172 can errr.. fit 5 people in it.. err maybe .. if they are really small..

Dash,

The cup breaks well, but if your not used to the back moving around under hard breaking I would reconsider your options. Ive got to admit Iam used to ABS and Traction Control, did freak me out a little when braking hard. I tend to avoid the wet weather as well!

Thanks Cuppy , It sounds similar to my 172 then. I used to end up in the next lane when braking hard at speed. My 172 used to happly lift its back leg up on roundabouts. A nice feeling when I got used to it.

The V6 simply sticks to the road like glue either braking or flinging it into corners. I am honest always, and must admit its a tad boring. I must go and get some proper lessons in sideways sliding and crazy stuff like that. I lack the driving skill needed to make the V6 "twitch"

nah dash I am sorry I dont believe you about the handling of your v6..

You will have to bring it round and leave it with me so I can verify this for myself.

Listen guys, I laugh when im over at the SSC board and I see VTR owners saying that they have reached 130+, I see no difference here.

You are NOT doing 145MPH, if thats what it says on your speedo. More like circa 130MPH!

According to the AP22, clocks are fairly accurate to about 60 mph but then start to lose it seriously! Both my Williams and Oakleys 1.6 16v were over reading by around 8% by 100mph.

Teady - so why is the top speed of the 172/Cup 138MPH then - that has been tested around a proper test circuit with proper timing gear 100s of hopurs put in - not just some geezer from a renault workshop reading the speedo! 138 is the top speed - fair enough if the speedo says 145 then it probably is 138, but not 130 as you put it!

Cupsize, I never said that the Cup/172 wont do 138MPH, all im saying is that at that speed the speedo is at least 10% out! The reason ppl say that the car has a little bit more is beacause you are creaping along at 131/132/133 up to 138, probably about 150 on the clock!

And Im agreeing with you Ted - If the speedo says 145 - that probably equates to 138 = max speed! I thought you were saying that if your doing145 on the speedod then that would equate to about 130, which couldnt be!

well my speed said 145-146 and my GPS said 143.. so I would tend to believe the GPS more than the speedo.. which means my speedo was out by 2-3mph

Because the US have downgraded the public GPS systems, rendering them useless. Accuracy is down to 100m-300m due to the fighting in Iraq.

Correct... there will be a speedo error, all cars have it...

But, I know for a fact that my Rallye speedo overreads, but not by as much as I though, becuase I once tested it with GPS to find out for sure. ;)

When my speedo says 100mph, then according to the GPS I am actually only doing 97mph so it aint a huge error, only about 3%.

Done tests at various speeds and the error seems to be pretty constant and doesnt increase as the speed rises, so at higher speeds it is still pretty good.

Now I dunno what the error is on the 172, but I still have access to the GPS device and I also have mates with 172s so we could find out... :D

Although with this Iraq thing the accuracy will be out!

I dont know how accurate it is but I have a speed sign on the way out of my estate and when I am doing 30 it reckons I am actually doing 27. Autocar have the Willie @ 100mph when the speedo is readin 104mph.
