106 GTi Progress

  421 Cammed 172
The heats causing it to crack by the look of it mate.

You may be better with a polished one, think it would look alot better.

Kudo's for all the work tho, it's going great! Making me want a 106 GTi now :rasp:

Prob because i done it with hammerite, got bloody bored of polishing.

Don't fancy taking the rockers off again tbh, getting a perfect non leaking seal is harder then you'd think.

Think everyone needs to own one. So much fun for the money.

Did you use VHT Paint?

How much are the Chrome/Polished Versions?

Seen a few sell for £40-50 on ebay, just takes time and effort, or less with a drill attachment.

I never really set out to get a perfect finish, just something better then a skanky mouldy bare metal.

Oh its definitely an improvement over how it was.....Just think VHT Paint would have given a smoother finish.

Car is coming along nicely.

I used Hammerite from the tin, and was drinking Guiness throughout the process and started slapping it on. Should have pinched the spray from work.

As you'll learn if you get the GTi, getting the rockers back on isn't fun atall!

Yeah don't think I'll be farting about with it too much unless it looks really really bad.

You decided what you're doing about the wheels yet?

I want a change, maybe some black or amph Raptors, or Cyclones, or Turinis.....

I'd have a go at painting mine, but need a spare set. Want the rear lowered a bit more too, but don't think i really can be arsed to spend the money on it.

I'm pretty tight with money:boring: Need to get chumsy with some 106 folk.

4 branch manifold ideally supersprint, catcam 708's and a chipwizards map. Fast car!!!

I wish, the bodywork isn't in anyway mint though, would feel like i'd be pouring money into something not that great. And i'm not the sort of person to spend my life savings making it look mint.

If i had another car i'd track **** it.

Its always satisfying doing the work yourself.......Prep is the key and leaving everything long enough to cure.

Only seen one 106 on Turini's and thought it looked quite nice but will be quite pricey won't they?

if you look on the forums and buy used i reckon you could do it fairly cheap and you will have a car civic type r pace.

Yup.

Might look into getting a cheapo set of steels or something, or maybe buy some black raptors off 106 owners. Don't really have a direction i want to go with the car, just get bored of looking at the same car all the time.

Plenty of Raptors and Cyclones on the Bay for sale but should be able to get a set cheaper off a Pug Forum.....Any scrappies local to you as I'm sure there will be 1 or 2 Quiksilver/GTi's in there with Raptors on.

Just remembered A5 Salvage specialise in French motors!

Need to get back into being a full on car geek, just hate seeing all my money go!

I've kind of lost interest in cars but I think if I get the 106 I might get right back into them.....Just general tidying up though as I've wasted enough on modifying my Clio.

Other possibilities if offsets work-

205 GTi Wheels?

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Rallye steelies in Black/Anthra/White?
206cc Wheels?

Depends on the route you want to take I suppose

Quite like the 205 GTi wheels in black and a coloured rim.

Rallye steels to everyone else would just look like i've painted some steelies.
Only enthusiasts would get it.

Black Wheels with red Rim Tape I'm guessing?

Yeah that is true as in essence thats all they actually are.....Are they lighter or something though?

How do you find this compared to a Clio? I'm thinking of selling my Ph1 for a Gti, but only have experience of the earlier Xsi. Very nice to see one being de-chavved!

I've only driven a 1.2 and dci clio so i guess i'm not the best to ask about comparing performance.

I guess you'l lose out on toys if you sell the Clio but i love the basic rawness of GTis and the chuckability. I had a little try against my brothet inlaws Civic type r and to be fair the cheap little 106 didn't do all that bad, and if you free up cash selling the clio its a bonus, some things are more important than cars of course.
I'd say buy one to see what the fuss is all about and if it's not for you sell it, another thing i like about 106s, they are piece of piss to buy and sell them, not a major investment like most other cars.

Coby, thanks for them links i'l have a look later, as i'm on the mobile.

Shall do. TBH I could possibly do with something just a bit cheaper to insure, but still fun to drive on the commute. I know they are a piece of piss to work on as well which is a bonus.
