16v Dog Bone Tip

Just put a new dog bone stabiliser on my 16v.

I know you can buy uprated ones but what i did was buy a standard renault one and squeeze silicone in to the voids in the big rubber. Leave in the warm overnight to cure then feel how much stiffer it is after (no puns please) .

Tell you what, worked wonders on mine so save yourselves money....

Excellent, thanks for the tip.

How easy is it to change the dog bone when the engine is in the car?

If its dificult, I might just fit an uprated one to my car whilst the engine is out.

Cheers,

Chris.

I dont think you can do it while the engine is out mate ???????? Really easy with the engine in though, 2 bolts, 20 mins max !?!?

ah, i see. where is it situated on the engine then?

Ive only ever replaced the round drivers side one. (bloody expensive that was too! and that was trade price!).

Ill give this tip a try then, I remember mine was pretty worn. if it doesnt work too well after a while in operation, then I can buy an uprated one.

thanks.

To be honest mate Im not a mechanics bod so couldnt tell you what the bits and pieces connect too. If you jack up the front of your car, get underneath its the egg shaped thing with two bolts in it, even I couldnt miss it and it was easy to replace. Im sure someone on here can explain it a bit more technically than me though !! I replaced it and the difference was immediate !

Dog bone is easy to change - Look at the back of the engine from underneath, its near the exhaust pipe.

Better off on a ramp though.

ah i see.

because my clio is lowered about 60mm ish, and is running on 15s, i cant reallt get under it!

Ill have a look later, my engine is now out of the car. I think I know where it is!

thanks.

LOL!!!!

that is a reall old skool classics trick where you want a stiffer bush, but either not as stiff as a poly one, or your too cheap.

Very good, carry on......lol

I used instant gasket coz i dries harder than any other silicone.

I suppose any will do the job though, i realise it sounds stoopid but honestly, it works well!!

it doesnt sound stupid to me. gotta be worth a shot anyway. cant do any harm.

silicone is used a lot for bushes and stuff, so why not? (I know decent bushes are polyurethane).

and if the standard mounting has got big gaps in it, then it is defo gonna make a difference. Even If it isnt as stiff as the uprated aftermarket mount, its still gonna be better than std.

Garage down the road just offered me one for £22 Quid - does it have another name though in case he has quoted me for another thing because in his book it wasnt called a dog bone mount.....
