172 & 172 cup differences

Ok guys/gals I'm getting a 172 in January / February - Moving on from 7+ long years of Pug 106 ownership

I went out in a mates 172 cup earlier in the week and loved it

I'm now trying to decided between the standard 172 or the cup

Could anyone give me a list of the actual differences between them?

Do the cup alloys (turinis?) fit directly on the non cup 172?

--

After that, assuming I get a cup as thats the way I'm leaning at the moment - what's the "must have" mods?

I like a bit of antisocialism so an exhaust and decat will be high up on my list - plus I've heard K-Tec do some fairly competent and cheap coilovers?
What about induction kits?
And any other kind of essential bits?

I could be barking up the wrong tree but I know from 106's that uprating bushes and getting some decent suspension is kinda essential lol

People will tell you that 4 pots aren't needed. The standard brakes are very good and can be made even better with uprated disks, pads, braided lines and fluid.
As for cages, there are a few on the market but I'm not best placed to answer. I know K-Tec do one or two different ones but it's not something I've looked into yet.

I only got some braided brake lines and replaced my brake fluid and i notcied the difference so i'm sure some uprated disks and pads would be enough

Get a 172cup .....do this ^ .....Done!

....unless you can stretch to a 182 (with Cup packs! not a 182cup! ;))

No, in all seriousness, the 172's aren't as reactive as 106's to things like mani, induction and exhaust. You can spend £500, and not see many gains at all.

That money is much better spent on suspension and brake upgrades. A decent set of coilies, and Brembo disks, ds2500s, braided lines and 5.1 fluid will see you a pretty capable little car!

172 with turinis over a cup though. Decent seats, AC, ABS are the main differences.

Oh, and make sure you get one with the cambelt etc changed! That's a £4-500 job, on the 172's. Cups are slightly cheaper because of the lack of ABS.

I think you mean lack of Air Con (Although some Cups did have CC as a Option)

RLY?

Didnt realise that cheap leather covers made them better?

  172 cup
cup all day long mate. As for must have mods -

As said brakes. Brembo h/c's, ferrodo ds2500, braided lines and I personally run ate racing blue fluid

Most induction kits give no gain what so ever, infact its fairly common people fit them and go back to standard airbox with ITG panel filter. The ph1 airbox is said to be better along with a CAF

Matched inlets are a nice affordable little mod for the engine

Exhaust is pretty much down to personal pref and how loud or not you want to go. 182 manifolds are compatable with a custom link up pipe. 182 manifolds are 4-2-1 rather then 172 is 4-1 But a ball ache to fit but that is a grey area on this forum whether it makes a differance or not, seems the fact its a ballache to fit that people dont like this mod

Suspension - Solid top mounts are are a bit of a must have due to squeaking from standard ones and improved handling with them. Kam racing sell the AST's which are adjustable for camber etc. As for lowering eibach sportlines on standard shocks seem to satisfy most, but for youself I think you would want a stiffer shock to go with if not then coil overs. I personally find sportlines on standard shocks give to much body roll leading to understeer

Mapping - Rs Tuner is a handly cheap little gadget for loading up maps and also accessing the vehicles diagnostics etc

Prob missed a fair few bits and bobs but im sure others will fill you in

  Maybe a 172 Cup..
What, there's differences between 172FF and Cup??

Never seen a thread about it. Will have to do a search..

Go for a cup, fire some xenons on it, some sportlines and you're away..

172's are a bit...hmm unless modded..

Buy a cup, then do the following:

Fit Ferodo DS2500's, Brembo HC's, braided lines, dot 4, espace v6 airbox with ITG filter & purchase a ktec stealth when the original exhaust falls off.

You dont need to do anything else whatsoever imho. You will simply make it worse for everyday driving and A/B roads. Then, like many people, you will tire of your stripped, coilovered clio & sell it for some boring family barge.

2 weeks later, you will buy another clio as the family barge is boring.

Thats how we role on CS tbh.

Agree completely. :)

I would also add that Sportlines improve the car considerably too!

Martyn will disagree big time.

His made around 165bhp standard, and then 180ish with the 182 mani.
