TBH In everyday driving there's little between the Cup and the FF -
thats just not true. Lots of 172MKII`s dont make their claimed power (one recently RR`d with 135hp !! but that was broken from factory) a 172cup is faster and will overtake a 172MKII no prob imo. removing weight in my MKII172 didnt have the same effect as removing it in my cup also.
110kg is a big diffo.
hear is my theory a 150bhp motorbike ( gsxr) has 952 bhp pertonne. a bugatti 1000bhp (987) has around 650bhp pertonne. the motorbike will be faster in a straight line although maybe not much as bugatti has HUGE LBFT maybe that would make it even
my point is, one weighs 160kg and one weights 2000kg
the cup 1020kg weighs less so every hp counts for more = 169.34 hp per tonne (unsprund weight of turinis on that increasing to a theoretical 174bhp pertonne)
the MKII fullfat 172 weighs 1110kg so = 155.61 pertonne
in basic terms, both with same hp side by side the cup has a 15bhp advantage. so look at it in another way two Identical weighted cars one with 100hp one has 115bhp which one will be faster (+ unsprung extra advantage on the cup)
now the argument for buying a jap turbo car to whip a cup is not always a great one look at chris n nics`s cup slightly stripped (no back seats thats it i think) decat, induction kit, r-sport remap. only puts out 185bhp but i have vids to prove it beating scoob`s down the 1/4mile and almost by a bonnet lengh beating 0-60.
cheap as chips, basic "chav style" mods and yet produces accelaration that rivals at roughly 245-250bhp saloon level due to weight.
there wont be another car like the cup again, no ABS, ultra light great Power to weight and feedback through steering suspension. just look at the new 197 (194hp) 1210kg (without driver) less hp pertonne than cup, less top speed, more steering assistance less feedback no doubt (like megane) etc.. even a 197 RSMKII Cup will probably be only 20kg lighter due to rules reg`s of nowadays just like the 182cup.
the cup was the last great true supermini/hothatch imo, great economy reasonable costs, cheap running yet fun and suprisingly fast.
THE END.
