172/182

In need of a daily almost got one before but didn't seem to be a great fun car to have which I'm wanting !

But what can I expect to get ? Which is better 172/182 and why?

Sub 2k lower the better BUT with history belts done and lower miles the better.
Not fussed on colour mods etc.

Any help would be great.

I bought a 182 about 3 weeks ago for less than 2k, but I think was lucky as most you see are 2k +, plenty on here love the 172 as well....

I've got a few clios I'm selling ph1s, ph2, a cup and 182. PM if interested.. Prices from 1-2k

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
182

for:
bit newer so on average less wear on components and less corrosion
better choice of colours
better exhaust manifold layout

against:
exhaust looks like a wheelbarrow
no spare wheel well
no rear tow eye

172
for:
epic looks (if ph1)
cheaper
has spare wheel well
has rear tow eye

against:
worse manifold/cat layout
more limited colour choices
no cruise on early ones
no aircon on the tesco value cup models

Really though its more about condition, there isnt anything much between them

For 2k your nearer the bottom end of the market. High mileage Silver likely.

182 all the way..sounds better IMO looks sportier, more colours, better alloys and newer. 172 are nice don't get me wrong but 182 just seems to stand out that bit more.

I'm mightily confused by this. You know it is essentially the same car, so how it sounds better / looks sportier is beyond me.

Lol. Badly worded on my part. You can't get a 182 in Flame Red, ergo a 172 is better. ;)

Except its just a not very suitable colour for a sporty car, dont get me wrong its pleasant enough in a way, just doesnt suit the sportiness of the car, would look better on a pensioner spec rover 400 or similar really.

It sounds different and looks different because it has a totally different exhaust system with a twin exit (wheelbarrow spec) exhaust instead of a useful spare wheel well.
although as at least 95% of 172 must now be on some sort of replacement exhaust anyway its all a bit acedemic what the factory sound was

I don't think I've ever heard a standard exhaust on a 172.

Only issue I have with the 172 is the standard wheels. They're horrible.

I'd go for the 182 purely for the cruise control although I think some late 172's have it, and it can be retro-fitted.

Proper 172's come with quite attractive OZ F1 motorsport style wheels.

Its only the later ones that got the ugly wheels.

Of the major 4 variants
172 Ph1
172 Ph2
172 Ph2 cup
182

Its only really the ph2 non cup that got really hideous wheels.

Yeah cruise can control can be retro fitted to the later 172 (and some had as standard) which is a nice way to modernise it a bit.

Fancy helping me find one then haha

I am sure I have probably just put the kiss of death on mine now, but I think I was quite lucky, you don't see them very often at that sort of money, just keep looking plenty of choice out there.....

I personally hate the 182 wheels. There rank.

Ive ve had a 182 trophy.

Now have a 172 ph2 on ph1 wheels. And with a 182 manifold and Decat.
Apart from the lack of cruise control I think it's got the best of all the bits

I have a kwik fit special on my Cup (previous owner). More engine noise which suits me. No chance of failing noise tests and according to a few GPS runs isn't robbing the car of much if anything either.

Same, picked mine up for £1650. Link is under my user name.

The problem is its really tidy now after a lot of your hard work which most people wont want to or able to do.

Not sure on the miles, but you bought a 4 plate non cup pack 182 for 1650-

the wheels were battered, interior was mank, steering wheel fubared, knackered wheel bearing , & so on. & im sure things like tyres / service / belts are on the list as well. You have done a great cost efficient job of getting the best out of the car but to finish it & make it decent taking that same car most people would be well north of 2k to get it decent.

I guess it depends on what he wants - to buy a finished 'decent ' 182 that doesnt require belts & or loads of money spent or is lunar mileage is pretty difficult & then to go on & be satisfied with it on 2k is almost impossible ( unless like you you do it all yourself )

All in you will need the top end of 2750 to buy & complete a decent ph 2 172 sub 60k & nearer 3.5k for a FF 182 thats again really nice.
Thats not however to say he cant buy one for sub 2k & spend the time bringing it up to scratch like you did.....

Our RB was 1800, fundamentally sound but needed loads doing and is high miles.
Its a 6K car now 6 months later already and still rising.

For me I knew I wanted to change so much anyway it wasnt worth paying a grand extra for a tidier one as I would still want to build a new engine, still want to swap to trendlines still want to swap to refurbed turinis and coilovers etc, but if all you want to do is buy a car and drive it then spending more to get a better one makes SO much sense, not least because it will hold a lot of that value anyway as good unmolested ones are getting harder and harder to find.

You must know a lot more about engines than me if you can discern a difference, Ive built and mapped quite a few 172 and 182 engines at various spec levels from standard to 300bhp+ including turbo ones and ITB ones, and at NO point have I been able to find a sucking in whistle that is distinct to the 182 or in fact any physical difference between the engine components at all, other than the very basic external mods, Ive even done things like swap the manifold from 182 to 172 so its a direct comparison on the same engine and still not found it.

So either you are imagining it, or you just understand these engines at a higher level than is possible for us mere mortals who have just spent 20 years building/modifying/mapping engines.

My friend in question paid £1900 for a Cup packed Arctic 182 that was clean and tidy and didn't need the belts doing, decent mileage too. Either a billy bargain or something dodgy lurks underneath...

There is always going to be the occasional bargain, but unless you are in no rush to buy its naive to expect you can get one too.

Nice purchase.

the only dodgy thing lurking underneath would be the standard exhaust!

I managed to get hold of a 172 cup with a new clutch and timing belt, completely standard with the speedline turini's, 80,000 miles and 10 months MOT. It needs a new bonnet and exhaust but I paid £1350 for it.

probably cat to manifold whistle.......erm NOT a feature!

I paid over the odds for mine knowing what I know now. Went in totally blind, zero research and pretty much ignored the advise on here...and Iv been fairly lucky I think not to get a total lemon. I had a budget of £1500 and picked up my 172. 103k when I got it, 12 months MOT, 6 months tax, patchy but ok service history and needed belts doing in the next 6 months or 8k. I ended up paying £1600 (£100 more than I had budgeted) and its been a decent little car in the end

So far its cost me:
-£600 for belts and full service
-£30 new springs
-£30 locking wheel nuts
-£15 new airbox
-£30 new number plates
-£130 two new tyres

So in total my 172 has cost me £2435.

I know I paid over the odds for it to start with, but have taken that on the chin and now I have a nice little car that I have no idea what I would swap it for in the future. It ticks all the box's! Mine is the least desirable basic 172 PH2, so if I manage to get £1500 for it at resale in a year or so, I will be happy with that.

My advice to the OP is look for a tidy 172 like mine, you can find these for very little money now, This one looks decent enough. I wouldn't bother looking for a 182 on your budget, they are near as dammit identical and the 182 demands more money, and your budget wont get you a very good one from my experience.

Jack
