172 Advise

Hey Guys, any chance you could spare me a few minutes....

I just bought my first 172 today and there are a few things puzzeling me. The car is registered on sept 2002 and is an import, therefor the manual is in belguim I think, but is in pristine condition with 4600 miles on the clock.

Could anybody tell me what the green gear stick in the bottom right hand corner of the dash means ? It comes on and goes off when I start the car. Also, how do I know whether the car has traction control or not ? is there anyway to tell without killing myself.

Im also thinking about buying an alarm - not liking lots of keyfobs, are there any ones that you would recommend that work off the stardard central locking ?

Also, thinking of installing a multichanger. Is the wiring already there under the seat and do I have to buy a certain make ?

optimum gear change lever, it comes on when you need to change gear to keep in the optimum revs etc

For ESP and for traction control (I think), there should be a little button on the lower right hand side next to the brightness adjust for the dash board. it has a picture of a car skidding. That button swithces it between off and automatic mode. If its there you have it.

There should be one under the passenger seat.

With the engine warm around 7k limits at 7.2K

Do a search on alarms which should bring up a few that work off the key.

In line with what mitch asked about the multi changer wiring, will a November delivered new 172 have the under seat wiring there ready for a changer (in case i chose it as an option), and also if it should have the wiring in place, will the 6 disc VDO Dayton i have in my Dynamique fit this wiring? (if so ill be removing it on collection day).

The 6 disk changer is standard kit in 172’s isn’t it? I had one in mine and I never ordered it as an option.

Bloody cheapskates that use to be standard kit, don’t they make enough on the 172 as it is with out taking bits out of it.

No it doesnt its just a shift light to warn you that youre getting near the limiter!

after reading through some of the posts on this forum, I have also noticed that there seems to be a way to get Renault to give me my three years warranty instead of one or am I wrong ?

Has anybody done it and does it work. I here that renault dealers get sh*tty about imports

I suppose thats why its called an optimum gear change indicator then, it tells you when you have reached optimum power not here comes the red line ohh I think its great by only notice it a night, but why is it situated the other side of the dash?? ie no where near the god damb rev counter?? its like... look left then look right ooh change gear ...now

strange that its got the gear thingy, but not traction control. Could it be that they have just removed the switch so that you cant switch it off ?

Notice how it moves with the rev limiter when engine temp changes?!

It really does just warn you of the limiter and when the engines too cold for full revs & the limiter is lower, it lets you know before you hit it.

Its been nicked then...mine was an import and it had one. Although if you replace the head unit it would become a doorstop!! as only the OE head will work it. Dont think the cable...if that is there...will work with anything else either, could be wrong tho.

Never check my optmium gear change light tho......to busy hanging on to it...LOL!! it all gets mental above 6.5k....BBbbrrrmmmm!!!

Imports usually dont come with the CD changer, they sometimes dont come with any CD player what so ever, so that maybe why its missing (this is what the guy told me when I was looking at buying an import). I always thought that the optimum gear change indicator has always been standard on the 172 both mk1 and mk2, I think the ESP thingy came in early this year. I say this as its not mentioned in the broucher I have, nor is it in the picture of the interior of the 172 and I got that broucher this year.

in reply to the question asked about problems with non uk dealer cars with full renault warrenties, on a previous thread i asked the same question, as im about to collect a broker ordered 172, full uk spec etc, i only got 1 reply from a guy who said he bought his car from holland!!! ( a true import) and got no bother from his local renault dealer.. at the end of the day, the dealers still get paid the same for the work they do by renault so it shouldnt make a difference..
also, the ammount of people who have said that if you dont like the service off your local dealer then try someone else suggests that it doesnt really matter where you bought the car as long as you have a warrenty!!!
