172 and Engine oil usage

I've hust been reading through my Service Booklet and Owners Manual that came with my car.

In one of them it says that between one or two services you may need to top to the engine oil up a few times :S

Does this sound about right ?

Or would a drop in oil level ring alarm bells, pointing to a possible leak somewhere ?

What do you's guys think ?

AS MY 172 HASN'T BEEN USING ANY OIL IN BETWEEN SERVICES :)

(Ahh bloody caps lock) :(

Touch wood :S

Never had to top mine up.

Some engines use more oil than others I top the wife's Puma up at least twice between services.

^^^^as said above , do check it regularily , never really been an issue but i dont do alot of miles tbh

Ive heared the 172 is quite good on oil... but on my GF's Punto Sporting it has to be toped up every 2 months.... apparently all puntos are the same... its best just to check every now and then.

its rare the F4R's use oil, but entirely possible (a little bit is fine, if it starts using a lot then the engine is usually on its way out i've found)

some VW engines can use upto 1L every 625miles for example

i think renault say upto 1L per 1000miles is within tollerance

Mines never used any, apart from after having the head taken off, but after i topped it up it's stayed topped up.

Cheers guys and Fred. :)

What oil would i use if i ever have to top up ?

5w40 ?

As i don't know what dealer has put in my car at last service and it don't say on receipt :(

So i called the dealer after reading that in manual. :)

To be told.

"Mr Harper, i've just asked one of the mechanics and he says it doesn't matter what oil you put in to top up and you can get it from Halfords"

Hows that for Evans Halshaw Aberdeen customer service

If that was case why would you get different grades for the 172 ?

Good old Renault there useless with everything from getting parts to advice etc :(

Would it make any difference or have adverse affects on my engine if they filled it up with 10w40 say and i topped up with 5w40 ? ?

na you'll be fine mixing oils

minimum allowed is 10W40 semi

most use 5W40 fully syn (as recommended by renault, and you can buy it from halfords, just don't buy castrol!)

Ok Cheers

Whats the story with Castrol ?

Is it stuff no good for the F4R ? :S

If not, what is ok to use thats widely available on high street as a top up ?

halfords own brand 5W40 is fine for top up (or pop down a small motorfactor, usually cheaper)

castrol doesn't work well with the tappets in the F4R i've found

Ah ok cheers ;)

They get a bit noisy or something ?

Apart from Castrol what others would you stay away from ?

And this may sound silly but i top it up to max mark on dipstick don't i when needed topped up at any time down the line ?

Reason i'm asking, a few of my mates say your engine oil doesn't have to be on max on dipstick all the time and it can be below (meaning anywhere between half and full on dipstick):nono: and i argued it did have to be at max mark or it'd damage engine. :rasp:

Whos correct ?

as long as its a decent amount above MIN, you'll be ok

the difference between MAX and MIN is only 1L (i think)

do NOT overfill it, make sure you check the oil level with the car on a flat surface, and leave the car for an hour or so before topping up

oh and have fun with the dipstick, they're a bit of a bugger

I was into Renault today o collect a passengers side washer jet i ordered for my headlight.

I also asked what oil the used in the cars they serviced?

They said 10w40 part synthetic for all petrol cars.

is 10w40 part synthetic ok for a 172 etc?

Or should i change my oil to something a bit better ?

Was i Halfrauds today for tyre levers for my mountain bike and quickly looked at the oils.

All i noticed they had was 5w40 in Halfords own brand and Castrol 1 litre top up Bottles :(

What about Mobil1 5w30 ?

Is it too thin ?

Or will it be ok ?

Or what about Millers CFS 10w60, XSS 5w30, XFS 5w40 or XFS 5w50 here http://www.autosave-scotland.co.uk/browse/Engine_Oil__Petrol_269_0_0_3908.html

Or Even Shell Helix ?
http://www.autosave-scotland.co.uk/browse/Engine_Oil__Petrol_269_0_0_6430.html

Is Helix any good ?

Sorry to annoy you's again about oil, i just dont want to ruin my engine using wrong stuff as a top up and the same when i come to drain my oil to fit my sandwich plate in next month or so (fitting my oil pressure and temperature gauges).

Oil in 172 gets higher temp than 5w30 can handle (specially when driven hard). Viscosity of that oil is too low at over 100degC that 172 reaches
