Ah ok, obviously it wasnt going to be £90 ...haha.
But i honestly thought people pay £600+ because of man hours and expensive parts?
and alright i forgot the cambelt kit.... what do you mean special tools though?
as i thought all i would need would be valve spring compressors, some way to lift the head a toolkit?
and the parts:
cambelt kit
new head bolts
new valves (however many needed)
new gasket
new fluid
i understand its not an 8v but 16v cant be that hard to do.....

Depends on how much damage the snapped cambelt has caused TBH.

To do the job alone is easy in a weekend IF you're a competant DIYer and understand the process but you're going to need:
- Cylinder head gasket
- Cylinder head bolts
- Coolant
- Timing belt kit
- Aux. belt kit
- New valves
- Valve stem oil seals (Silly not to do them)
- Camshaft locking tool
- Camshaft sprocket locking tool
- Crankshaft locking pin
- Valve spring compressor
- Tech wrech or torque wrench that can accurately measure force and angles
- Lapping paste
- Oil
- Filter
- Re-seal cam cover... Silicone is NOT a safe or recomended solution

To give you a rough guide.
Bent valves replaced and a head skim etc i payed £400. Giving the head to an engine specialist is far easier to do. Replace all 16 valves so you dont take any chances. Get them lapped etc which is a must with new valves. You can buy a grinding stick but you'd be there forever. Also put in stem seals.
so £400 for headwork (add to that as much as you like if its wrecked the bottom end but mines was fine
£150 approx for the tools for cambelt. Maybe more im not sure, try borrow a set
same again for the cambelt kit
same again for the head gasket set and bolts
same again for the aux belt kit
Oil and filter £30 - £50

Were not in 1990 anymore when it comes to engines. The cambelt process is quite tricky on these. If you havent read up on it you will get it wrong 100%
There are no timing marks to work with like older engines, TBH though, I find these engines far better to get timed up if you have the correct tools rather than an engine with timing marks.

Windscreen cover will cover the windscreen replacement, presuming you've got windscreen cover on your insurance ? Only you can tell us how much your glass excess is on that. If you want to know how much a screen is, ring Renault and AutoGlass. Is it cracked or smashed ? What else is damaged ? You won't be able to fit that yourself anyway I should imagine...
As for the wing, they're plastic, just replace it. Get one on here, eBay or at a dealers, or at a scrappy. Price varies, obviously.
Regarding the engine, you're in Yorkshire, ring RS Tuning in Leeds and ask them to pick it up, or arrange a tow there yourself if that's cheaper. Once you've bought all the tools, and argued with it for a few days, and then timed it up wrong, you'll take it to a specialist anyway :rasp: /pessimist

any decent machine shop would do this anyway. Forgot to mention it. Mines were fine luckilly, but think they are around £120 for the set

Believe it or not that's not the cheapest way to go - You've got to fetch it, fit it and you'd be silly not to do the timing belt, clutch and some other bits to whilst you're there which already sends the bill to the £1200 mark. Then there's also the chance that you're buying a duff engine with moon mileage that's been pressure washed and sold as a "genuine 45k" motor.

Yeah thats true, but if its going to be nearly £1000 to do your own engine, i'd get a second hand one and spend a little more making it tip top. But then if you bought the car to sell, you will end up spending as little as you can.

Yep, very true but a decent used engine adds roughly (on average) £450 to the bill straight away just to purchase the tall block which is the timing belt, aux belt and dephaser pulley parts price. I always say "Better the devil you know" unless the engine you're repairing has done 100k or more.
