172 choice

  CLS, RS MEG
Hi. OK im after a MK2 172. The ones for 5.5/7k have traction control on them. The earlier models of this phase 51plate to late 02 dont have TCS. Does it make a huge difference? Theres some really cheap 172's about without the TCS. Should i pay the extra £1500 or so to a model with TCS?
I understand they have ABS and EBD anyway?

Traction control is overrated, i don't have it, it's never been a prob.

why would anyone need traction control unless they can't control their right foot properly??

You can turn the ESP/TC off and the later 172's anyway.

TC doesn't restrict to much away.

Lol. I put deposit on it, but my insurance money hadn't come through in time, so i had to pull out. I then bought a red 172 in Southport, and the guy sold it to someone else whilst i was half way down the Country picking it up. So i got a Mk1 clio at the moment until im 21 at the end of feb. The insurance and comp have paid out now so im either sinking it all into a 182, or saving a good chunk and getting a 172 instead. Watch this space :)

So with regard to traction control, most people agree it doesn't make much difference?

IMO, unless you 'need' a certain colour or the stigma attached to those elusive extra 10 PS of a 182, I would go for the cleanest, lowest mileage phase 2 172 you can find and save the rest for a house.

Compare RR figures for 1*2's and you will see that the 172 is always on top.

lol^ You will have to take me for a ride in yours Chris to aid my decision ;) But im in favour of a 172 due to the reasons above. Its the same car! If i get one without TCS im looking at 4/5 grand max

It looks good though Chris. It can't be that much worse than the Apex though.

Every time I saw Jamie drive it, he was pottering along at the speed limit -10%. I remember passing him at ***mph, he was travelling the other way doing around 45 mph and I can understand why.

If you want a 182, buy an early 172 for £5k then ask Mr Murray to re-map it for a further £275 et voila.

I think a 172 will be fast enough for me. I could always have a replica twin exhaust and fit my cup wheels to it :)

lol. it is pretty hard!

although to be fair it's only about 10% stiffer than my old apex & oe shocks.:S

sounds like a plan actually. buy a cheaper 172 and spend the dosh modding it.

there are some fairly low mileage ones knocking around

I was in a similar situation to you mate but in the end I went for a mk 2 172 and it's absolutley superb. To be honest though if I could have stretched to 7/8k then I would have bought a 182. I don't like admitting it but the 182 does look better mainly because of the wheels and exhaust.

  RenaultSport 172
I actually prefer the wheels and exhaust on the 172. Only reason I'd get a 182 is becasue its newer.
