172 Cup advice

  Citroen C2 VTR
I'm new on the site...signed up primarily as I'm looking at buying a 172 Cup.

There's one for sale near me, a 03 plate with 29k on the clock and a part service history. It is listed at £4,495.

I spoke to the dealer who tells me the service book only has one stamp at 14k, so it will need a service straight away. He also isn't aware of whether the aux belt has been changed...but I suspect it probably hasn't going by the book.

How much will a service cost?
Is the aux belt included in this?

The costs for these are likely to be used to try and batter the price down a bit.

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated. First time ClioSport buyer (currently driving a C2 VTR).

Thanks, so it needs a cambelt change, which will include the aux belt? My research tells me this will cost £500.

Anything else obvious to look out for?

well if its a 172 cup with no AC the cambelt and aux belt is cheaper, its only about £300 (GO TO A SPECIALIST NOT A RANDOM GARAGE!)

for that money i'd expect mint wheels all round, mint tyres (all the same make) all round

the exhaust if still standard will fall off at some point

milage should be the last thing you look at really, condition and service history are far more important

i had a cup 2weeks ago, low milage, mint condtion, f**ked gearbox! the guy had owned the car about 2weeks too, hello £1K repair bill

As Danny says, you have lots of haggling ammo on this one. Definitely needs beating up on the price.

Perfect guys, thanks for the advice. Glad I asked.

How much would use guys aim for as a maximum target price based on the ad/other info, £3.5k?

I would say that was well overpriced due to the things that need to be done, you will easily get it lower if you haggle.... but if you don't, buy mine!

Ooh good spot. I'd do an HPI on it also. If its wearing Xenons it could have had some previous and had them fitted by mistake.

If all is above board then i'd start at 3250 and see what he says.

Yeah as I said the guy has told me there is only one stamp in the book at 14k so I'm only assuming the belts haven't been done. Surely if they had the book would have been marked though.

Since the milage is milage interval is 72k for cambelt change, how much of a difference are the two extra years likely to have made considering it's only done 29k? I'm assuming less than if it had done 60-65?

Can anyone suggest a specialist in Scotland that I can gather some quotes from?

Done the HPI check - all clear.

If it was a 29k miles with FSH I would of thought someone would pay over £4500 for it so trying to get it for £3500 may be a bit ambitious!

Mis-match number plates annoy me. It doesn't look minty mint but then the pics may not be doing it justice... ie the wheels are bubbling.

If you could get it for anything under £4k it could be a good un.

But I'd rather buy one with FSH, belts done, lovingly cared for with 50k miles on the clock.

You'd be amazed how many people think the Cup is just a bog spec Sport... (i know it kinda is!) so it could of just been owned by a mid life crisis mum... how may not of serviced it????? I'd be checking the oil for sure!

With regards to the cam belt... that is bad!!! It's mileage / time dependant due to the materials used... 2 years over due is lick a ticking bomb imo!

Simple, stay away don't buy. It Obv hasn't been looked after correctly.

Plenty of 172cups going for alot cheaper with FSH etc.

Thanks for all the advice guys, going to see it on Saturday to give it a thorough look. Not quite as keen on it now though after reading some of the replies. I'll see how it looks on Saturday.

Well went and seen the 172 Cup this morning. It needs a fair bit of work to bring it up to mint condition (exhaust rusting, belts changed, front brakes, alloys refurbed, and taxed). All this considered I offered £2800 and not surprisingly I guess he declined.

Still looking!

72k or 5 years for the change!

Good luck in your search :)

Talk about gambling I bought it!
I took it to RJM in Glenrothes for a full service, belts, fiters, oil etc and new pads and disks all round. cost around £800.

But now I know the work has been genuinely done and the car feels like new, all switches, handles and interior are A1, steering wheel, seats and gear shift A1. Bloody hell, the car get 50mpg on the trip computer on a 300mile weekly commute and yet rips a smile onto my face if i feel the need.

Waxed it today and felt proud, nuff said?

Might do a wheel refurb in powder coat soon though.
