172 Cup Clutch

My Cup has done 56k and as far as I can tell its on its original clutch. There is no sign of it slipping, but the car had 26k on it when I bought it so I've no idea how it was treated during its early life.

Should I be planning for a clutch change soon?

No.

They're the strongest part about most RS', imo.

If treated well, they've been known to do well over 100k.

My clutch went at 77k on my cup from original. Which is really good for a sports car/hot hatch. I know alot of people would say 77k is terrible for a clutch, but i just compare to a Mitsubishi Evo which has to have its clutch changed every 30k.

Mine is on the orignal, done 92k and still feels great!!

Mine went at around 40k but i have no idea how the previous owner treat the car

I did mine in my old Ph1 whilst i was changing the gearbox, and the original clutch was still in almost new condition, after almost 105k!

Just taken a clutch off of a 41k cup engine, looks new lol, LOADS of meat left on the friction plate

Theres nothing to worry about, as long as its had its cambelt and aux belt changes.

My gearbox 'chatters' on idle so i'm guessing that the release bearing has gone.... Should I just replace the lot? (Clutch kit from GSF in Trafford - £103)

wait until it starts slipping or the bearing goes. should be pretty reliable really. Just don't do too many fast starts and you'll be fine

Thats the input shaft bearings, nothing to do with clutch.

Unless your hearing these noises while the clutch pedal is being pushed down at idle.

I'd do the whole kit, the main cost in a clutch change is the labour so its a false economy to just change the release bearing.

PLenty of JC5's ive seen have slightly worn input shaft bearings.

Infact my past 3 gearboxs have all sounded rattly at idle, although a cammed ITB idle does really make it sound like a bag od spanners.

You`ll know when its going because there will be smoke coming from the clutch area!! haha Mine did this after about 6 months of being noisey. The noisy release bearing is sort of an early sign that it will need changing soon!

I only hear the noise when my clutch is UP when I press it back down it stops...

Still original clutch at 133000 miles. I can just get it to slip now with sticky tyres and a flat out start.

So happy i read this, my phase 1 172 is on 42000 miles and was expecting the clutch to go any time soon, still feels good but biting point is high, so it seems this is normal then!

biting point on my Ph1 is SILLY HIGH! i mean i actually think i could breath on the clutch pedal and it would engage lol.

Its on 60k and no signs of slipping. just very high biting point so il leave it i guess

I went through 4 clutches in 2 years of evo ownership and less than 15k miles.

I managed to destroy one in 150 miles.

I did a lot of sprinting with balls out launches before anyone says I must be a cretin who can't drive lol.

The clutch does seem very good on the clio 172, so we'll see how I get on with this.

My clutch pedal as felt like a piece of s**t for the last 2 years but its been fine, it creaks like f**k when hot, cable is flowing nice and free tho
