You've answered your own question. If you want speed/fun 172cup (thats what i wanted) For luxurys FF models are better. If you're one for comfort though why buy a clio? Thats my opinion

while your on the subject which the "supposedly" faster 1? 182ff w/cup packs or std 182FF?

  Scirocco GT 210
None of them are noticeably faster than any other.

Just depends on whether you want a more raw driving experience, or a slightly more luxurious experience with some toys to play with.

^^ its cup culling season. lots and go pedal = lots of speed - ABS = ..................tree!!!!

no lets get this right.... lots of go pedal = lots of speed + greasy winter roads = tree, not abs

EVO figures there is Fook all in it weather they be 172 Cup, 182 Cup or Full Fat 182, or Trophy

Clio 182 - 0-60 6.6
Clio 182 Cup - 0-60 6.5
Clio 172 Cup - 0-60 6.6
Clio Trophy - 0-60 6.6
Clio 172 - 0-60 7.1

Not sure where all the so much faster comes from with 0.1 of a second in it between most of them straight line speed comes from. In the real world different full loads and drivers it's anyones guess which is quicker.

I will stick with my Cup Packed 182 and all its lardy toys please ;)

its only 172 cups that make the times down th 1/4 mile, and power on the r/r sessions.......

I don't believe that many people could feel the difference between to two. In reality as posted above, .1 of a second, I can really see people getting an extra stiffy from that .1

I don't think there are that many people here that can feel the difference. A gear change can make more difference.

So I say get a 182FF cupped or not, ride to comfort and style and learn when to change gear.......

Trophy was tight as a nuns chuff when tested, please feel free to consider it a 182 cup or a dab quicker. The weight on the ff makes a bit of a difference through the perennial twisties. Less unsprung weigh = good

  172 cup
in my opinion you will notice no differance in performance
when i test drove the 182 the seats were quite uncomfatable for me, that was the main reason i dismissed it,
personally i thick the cup would be a bad chioice as it is not very friendly for an inexpirianced driver and the 182 is better in most ways
id discount the 182 cup as a saving of 20 kilo's will make no discernable differance

It's more than 20kg, but let's not go there.

No ABS/traccy control can be a factor this time of year, just be aware of it.

For my money score a Trophy or 182 cup w' Recaros.

  BMW 535D
the weight difference between the 2 equated to that of a passenger, the rest is negligible due to say, amount of petrol in each car and the weight added by that. The real key is in the power:weight ratio:

clio 172: 156bhp/ton
clio 172 cup: 171 bhp/ton
clio182: 165bhp/ton
clio 182 cup: 168bhp/ton
clio trophy: 168bhp/ton

the 3-5 bhp difference between 182 derivatives and the 172 cup is not enough to make a noticeable difference on the road, and as the performance figures suggest, nor from a standing start either! Its all down to driver really.

when making your decision bear in mind that to really get the best out of a clio 172 cup over a FF 182 you'd have to be driving at full chat on every journey or in 'maximum attack' mode, and even then the difference is minimal.

sorry for the rant, it just annoys me when people try and tell me that the cup is faster :p

  Turbos.
Cups always seem to be the quickest though... whatever the paper stats says. Also, having the best power-to-weight figure will give better VFM if you're into modifying.

I personally think all varaints are cheap and cheerful. My 172's leather interior is hardly the last word in quality! The only things to decide over is the lack of aircon or ABS in the 172 Cup IMO...

Go for the Cup, although good luck getting insured!

I would go for the 182 ff, I made this decision by looking at where I would be driving it, (too and from work, too and from mates and for just general use) when looking further into some of these, I go to work around 9am and I have to sit in sh***y que's all the way there so I picked comfort rather than speed.

dont think thats right i know it dont matter but this is what it says

parkers says

clio 172 0-60 7.1
clio 172 cup 0-60 6.5
clio 182 0-60 7.0
clio 182 cup 0-60 6.9
clio trophy 0-60 6.9

i have had a 172 cup and a ff 182 and for fun you cant beat the 172 cup its the most fun

Get a mk1 172 and have the best of both worlds :p

The 172 cup has a power to weight of 167bhp/ton, not 171. Bringing it in line with the others.

  Nippy white cup
erm...171 is right ain't it...1011kg and 172bhp (don't get all giddy with the 170bhp argument as that would change the others as well)

Well the 182s have been worked out with 180bhp.

The 172 cup is 170bhp and weighs 1021kg (89kg lighter than the 1110kg FF phase 2).

170/1021 * 1000 = 166.5 bhp/ton. (I'll even round it up to 167 bhp/ton for you ;))

Sorry for being "giddy" :(

if ya got the money go for a 182, but looking at your age you might as well get a 172cup then spend the rest on the insurance :)

not much difference in all the clio sports imo, unless you start tracking them

JACKO CUP 172!

i would go for the ff if i was you.not meaning to sound a c**t but due to ya age and thinking your a good driver(i did at ya age) i think u will damage ya self big time. when i got my first cup i thought i was a good driver and then it went tits up on a greasy bk road..if you do get the cup dont drive it like u stole it.wait till the summer!!

How much work or mods you reckon it wud take 2 get the 182 std to the same so called pace as 172 cup then?

  Peddled device
Had a 172 Cup and 182 Cup...........182 Cup would be my choice.ABS t/c air/con more power (!) and comes in a better shade of blue.....IMO :)

  FF 182 w/cup packs
buy a 182ff with cup packs and don't fill it up with fuel and lose a bit of weight, that should even it it up, maybe take a dump before driving. IMO the difference is too small to lose out on the comforts.

got that out of evo bud, could be wrong of course.

richlawson, the figures posted by Rich are the ones that evo themselves tested with each car, not the manufacturers figs like parkers print!
