172 cup vs 106 GTi

  Engles Mummy
Hi all,

A friend of mine has just purchased himself a mint 106 gti, he has been bragging to me all afternoon about how fast it is and how it would blitz my car ect.

I'm going round his tomorrow and if the weather is looking on the plus side then we will go for a little blast down his way.

I don't know much about the Gti's but I have heard that they are very quick and good at handling. So I'm just wondering if I would leave him behind or shall I get prepared for a taming.

Cheers, Adam

I had one try it on the other day (neons + 18" wheels tho - yuck) as he was a tiny speck in the rear view mirror...

The old clio vs. 106 GTi threads have been done almost as much as the clio vs. other clio ones :dapprove:

Do a search :)

agreed. my mate has a VTS and its pretty much the same story. u will have the legs on him, but not by too much......

No need for a search, it's not like anything exciting is going on. So i might as well keep people posting :)

There's good ones and bad ones, same as the Clio.

If you meet a good one, don't expect to be shaking him off too easily. If you meet a bad on you should lose him.... but they're close enough for the driver to play the biggest part.

what is 'reaction time' on the quarter mile times, and how do they measure it? (assume its something to do with the gear changes?)

Great chat#!!! I think its worth mentioning (without sounding like Dad!) that if you go down to see you mate with the 106 dont be tempted to push that bit harder for the sake of beating him round the bend..... Its the only time (when pushing to prove somethng) that you'll likely end up in a tree and dead.

i have recently changed from a 106 gti to my cup.

standard the 106 is fast but the clio would always have the upper edge. id say the 106 had better handling too. its so small, like a match box. the 106 was a f**king b**ch in 2nd and 3rd, it was emense and just kept going. you could do just shy of 90 in 3rd. id also say that the 106 pulled better top speed, 5th gear doing 100mph +

i had my 106 RR'd at 150bhp. with my mods it surprised alot of cars(was also stripped out). and was very very quick, i would also surprise a cup. when having some fun with a cup the cup always had the edge, you could tell it had alot of torque. a modified gti could keep up a cup anyday, i wouldnt bet on it over taking one tho(unless it was cammed and mapped). around a corner maybe.. the cup will always have the edge. having more torque and a bigger engine. and still being pretty light weight.

(all comments above are imo, not subject to any argumentative w*****s who will disagree)

tehe.

against a std gti you shouldnt have any probs, with a few mods eg cams, manifold etc they would be on par with a cup

my mate has one, but another mate also has a 172. he 172 never exactly pulls away, but the gti would never manage to get past him. they are fast, but from what iv seen, not as fast as a 172! his is standard though, reckon a bit of weight reduction, breathing mods etc and it might give it a good run!

  Nippy white cup
It won`t be much faster but it will be...Craggy`s 106 was one of the faster ones and his best was 14.6 IIRC...can`t remember his mods but I`m sure it was something like manifold, decat/exhaust ect

No no no no!

This is the fastest 106...

106 GTI's handle like go-karts!!!

my mates got a 1.4 quiksilver and that can handle amazingly:eek:
not very quick at all but could outhandle a lot of cars.

In a straight line your's should leave that pesky gti for dead though:dead:

They are very good and a modded one, ie pugsport zorst & ramcooler, supersprint mani, cams & remap will be the same as a cup.

Remember though, your comparing a car that 'apparently' only has 120bhp vs a car from the hot hatch class above with '172bhp'.

Compare like with like, ie 306 gti6/Rallye vs 172 . . and they're pretty much exactly the same - ive had them all, they're all pretty much equal.

You can all argue your points till your blue in the face, but they're all excellent fun to drive, so frankly . . . who gives a sh1t :S

i hope there isnt that many bends......i wouldt of thought yu would loose him on the bends but on a stright run then you would pull away

if u r going to race 2 proove the point who's the daddy , make sure u r up front , its always harder for car to overtake once ur in full flow , but on a dual carriageway off the lights , make sure u make us proud , dont end up
in the ditch , racing is for the track .

I drive a GTi and I wouldn't exactly say I get left for dead by cups, I raced one at pod a few months back and got beaten by a few hundreds of a second (didn't help me not paying attention to the lights). I'm going to pod on sunday so if anyone fancies a race i'll be there :)

1st and second gear are pretty similar, but once you change to 3rd in the clio, you will see him disapearing in the rear view,as they just pull, where as the pug doesnt

Um again not technically true, unless it has a jet engine

Even round the corners I should be able to lose him as his car is completely standard and mine has got coils on it.

Kullycliosport "Racing is for the track" - lol you get paid to say that?

I love the gti's, I was thinking about getting one before the cup...but then my little baby showed up on auto trader and the rest is history!
