172 Cup vs Phase 1 172

  X-172 Cup
Having sold my pride and joy and looking for a £1500 'runaround' I have been tempted to up the ante to £3000 and buy a Ph1 1 172 - have seen them retailing @ about £3000 so buying one is a distinct possibility even though I'm supposed to be paying off all my debts  ...

If and it's a little bit of a big 'if' :S - I decide to get a Ph1 172 can I expect roughly the same performance? I appreciate that the car will be heavier than my Cup but I reckon the engine should feel as powerful having done more miles, also the handling should'nt be far off either or am I way off the mark here...???

Also any advice on what I should be looking out for on the Phase 1?...I only intend to buy one with a FSH, high miles are not too much of a problem so long as there is a FSH...

here one that's a bit too high on miles and lacks FSH but could be had for £2500

George16v went from a Cup to a Ph1 172.
Think he prefered the 172.

Thing is he then went back to a valver lol

B

Brown.

phase 1 mk1 172 is a def....i have a 182 and think mk1s look better... 40mm apexs are a must and it will out perform a 182 on the twisties

I have a 106 Rallye Series 2 that would be perfect as a runaround.

It is on eBay cheap at the moment, £2200, as the bodywork is a little tatty.

Great fun car and cheap to buy ;)

Phase 1 = phase quick. I don't think i should say this but Im gonna anyway. The phase 1's are the quickest clio's . I use to have the cups for breakfast.

like your style Jimmy - popular posting that will be m8 ;)

In reality the cup is a better car but that's not what you are asking.

In terms of performance the cup has the edge - it's lighter, more percise and has the better gearing but it's marginal.

The Mk1 172 will not be too far behind, it's raw, aggressive and understated.
If you are around the South of England I'll lend you my keys ;)

right thanks, I've heard enough and will start looking...there's a lovely 2001 with 80k FSH on the trader @ a dealer for £3200  - on the case with that one, they are faxing through the service history and I have asked for an appraisal of the bodywork/interior/wheels/tyres...

I went from a 172cup to a Mk1 172, never looked back. Cost me a third of my 172cup and sometimes think its more fun to drive! But has all the luxuries as well.

They are a great buy for the money at the moment.

when I buy it I'm gonna take it up there and tell them what I payed for mine...he will of course say that becasue mine has 35k more miles that makes over £4000 difference...

picking it up on Friday...3 sleeps to go...

spoke to the seller about it who 'owns' the car as one of a fleet of cars he manages for a Publishing company, when the cambelt was done they have to remove the injector housing (or something like that) so they replaced the injectors which I guess is a bonus if they don't need replacing, to quote the seller 'the cars are serviced regardless of cost' because they are fleet cars. nice ;)

72k miles or 5 years, whichever first.

So says the manual, but it would be better if you do it somewhere around 60k. I personally wouldn't wait till 72k.
