172 DIY turbo kits

  2002 clio 172
Tbh it wasn't my first choice of car, but my mate was selling it cheap at the time I was after a new car lol now I'm just after taking that smug look off my mates ace every time he sees me haha! Coilys, poly bushes, strut braces, sway bar ect are all making there way onto my car. :) should be a bit of fun of the track hopefully !!

You dont a trackday yet?
If not you'll be surprised how much fun it is even as standard I would suspect!

No I haven't done a track day yet, plan to when I get a chance to, was planning on going Combe on the 28th but I'm working that day which is typical lol

Whats in chips nova then? Haha

Old video of my nova when I was mapping it at mtech:

New engine not quite so cool, its a saab turbo now so cant rev it to 8500rpm like the old mega money one, but should make similar power :)

Its this engine now:

Currently trying to ram a supercharge on it as well to spool it sooner but struggling a bit for space :(

Might go back to using nitrous instead though, that works epically well with big turbos!

Wow :O!! That is mega !!!! A super and turbo ccharged nova would literally be ...in one word 'special' haha can understand why yous have trouble with space though haha!!! If only I had a car like this haha

Being mid engines gives me a lot more space than you would normally have in a nova, but the problem is just that the charger needs to be run off the belt, so that limits where it can go.

In that pic above, the alternator is missing from the bottom left, thats where I think I might put the charger, then put the alternator top right, sort of in front of the exhaust manifold.

All looking a bit tight though!

Yea I see what you mean, would be an animal if you mmanage to get it fitted though !!

What do you reckon to nos, a kiddy I know used to have it in a crx and said it made a hell of a difference ??

Nitrous is brilliant stuff, nothing works better for an easy massive hike in power TBH, downside is its expensive if you use it a lot.

My sierra cosworth engine for example, I put upto 125bhp of nitrous into that, and if I was paying retail price on the nitrous gas itself it would be costing upwards of 50 pence a second to use.

Basically, for drag racing its perfect, for trackdays its rubbish.

Very easy to install yes.

A decent quality kit costs about a grand, and a 50% increase in power should be easy enough to achieve.

If you only need your car fast occasionally, it would make a lot of sense.

Never really looked into it before! Think im going to stick to the RS2 with cams ect though lol maybe look at that at a later date :) would be a little bit mental if you have gain up to 50% power increase in some cases haha

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
Oh ive gained more than that mate. Thats just a typical gain.

I used to have an N/A engine in the nova with 124bhp @ wheels
It was 228bhp @ wheels with the nitrous with no other mods

So an increase of 84%

50bhp kit on a 172 works really well though, would certainly show your mate a clean pair of heals in his civic.

But RS2 and cams a far better option for trackdays, bit silly spending a grand just to beat your mate in a race on the road really.

That impressive gains from nos then, wasnt expecting that if I was honest!

To beat my mate is a goal of mine but not the only reason I want to do it, wanted to do a build on a car since I started driving and just having got round to it yet! So now iv decided that enough is enough I've just got to get on aand do it, but want to do it properly :) so that's why I've asked you I every question under the sun for advise haha

The thing is, all company's pretty much bulls**t you with BHP gains it's just one of there selling points, and of they don't bulls**t you they just test your car on rollers that will bulls**t you (they know this) so in all fairness it's just the way it is.

As chip said ED are a very honest company and the guy who runs it (forget his name) will always give you great advice and not try and force you to buy anything, and he has a hell of alot of experience with RS's too.

Honest company. Just not very honest with the power claims lol
