172 ECU Upgrades

  '04 172, '03 Hirsch 9-5

Hi all,

Well, I have just had a custom exhaust fitted, and Im lovin it :) But now I have the bug, Im sure it can go faster :)

Renault NZ do Superchips and I can keep the warantee, but I want greater flexability for further mods down track.

I only have a couple of choices, one is Unichip the other is an "Interceptor" which is a 3D map for the AFM. So the difference is basically..

The unichip can change timing values, the interceptor cannot. I know the unichip is better, its just that the interceptor can be removed - very easily and hard to detect. I.e. the plug does not have to be at the ECU. Oh and its cheaper :)

But the actual question is... Does changing the timing improve things that much? Or is it simply the fuel map that makes the most difference.

Cheers all

Yep best get a fully rempable one IMO.

Changing of the timing is good as it stops knocking etc also it allows you to use higher RON fuel (I imagine you have access to it) and take advantage of it.

The timing relates to the firing of the spark plugs its a complex are and Im useless at explanations but fully remapable is the way to go.

Best stay safe even if your timing changes only slight with a remap its safer on your engine as poor timing can lead to some serious expensive problem. Plus when you get some more mods you can have it remaped again at take advantage of the new mods.

Thanks edde,

Problem over here is that people are more than happy tweaking a Ford or Holden (Aussie sedans) or any Jap stuff, but when it comes to euro motors its easier for them to say no

The only other option I can go for is a stand alone computer -. Not sure about this and it aint cheap, not to mention a little hard to remove come service/warranty time.

Best leave it then IMO. The F4R engine has some unusally charecteristics so unless they tunners are aware of these they cn damage the engine (a forum user needed new pistons and rings when the tuners messed up his mapping although he only found out the damage when it all went wrong a while after it had been done.

Oh great, now Im inspired with confidence

Maybe the "safe" bet is the superchip - I have driven a car with it and it does make a difference.

Boo hoo Im off to cry now

Went for a custom built one, cost me the same, but it sounds great and its not a great big exhast tip (or two) sticking out the back - turned down like the OE one but just visable - painted black which helps to hide it.

It should let me get a bit more power - oh and the "ting ting ting" has now gone :D

Must say power delivery low down has improved, but she runs pretty rough until its warmed up

Oh, is that the custom built one from Renault? Coz if it is, I hope yours will last....how many KM did u do with your custom exhaust on??

Coz for mine.... I got it like two years ago.... but it didnt last.... and I replaced twice for the custom built exhaust (free of charge since still until warranty for the exhaust), it had some part keep loosen inside the center section (possibly from the mid-silencer) and making weird noise.... and now the part loosen once again....(maybe i am the lucky one to get the bad quality parts for the custom exhaust!!)

so I am planning to order a K-tec exhaust.... probably will have it next month.... and i agree about running rough until the car warmed up, i dunno if that is bcoz my bad quality exhaust or not.... will find out next month...

Bleed,

It is a Van Brugel Exhaust, and its only been on for like 2 weeks. It uses different parts than the one he developed for Renault NZ, because for me it was just too loud. I got it direct from him not through Renault Greenlane.

I hope it lasts too cause it wasnt cheep. $1600

Geez, whats the shipping costing you for the Ktec one?

And I see you have a v6 clio as well?

I am thinking of getting the HP IK and ECU chip... if I were to upgrade my exhaust system in future, will my ECU register the new mod or should I chip the car only after I fixed the IK and exhaust? Also, wat will be the rough gain in bhp with the same mods?

Rolly,

It is cheap for k-tec, it only costs not more than 1400 NZ$ including shipping.... but i dunno about the tax.... but probably dun need $1600 for sure and k-tec is stainless steel instead of mild steel, should last longer.....(from k-tec site, it said 285 pounds + 90 pounds shipping, I even show the k-tec site to the Renault guys, they said the exhaust is not expensive too).

I will probably order next week, then will know what it really cost since the exchange rate dropped a bit for NZ$. Anyway, hope the new Van Brugal exhaust improved now....

Have you install the viper IK as well?? The car sound really good with the viper IK...

And yup, got a V6 as well....

IsvenII,

Well, if u got the whole package with Induction Kit, exhaust and chip, u should expect around 190+bhp, or maybe a bit more....is not a lot, but it really make a different... from low to mid range. Coz I did the IK, exhaust and superchip, the car more responsive and better pickup after these mods.

Cheers,

Bleed

Bleed,

Youll have to take me for a spin :).

The only thing I have done is the exhaust, no induction kit as yet.

it is the wifes daily drive so it cannot be too loud :). I will probably wait out the three years then get some engine work done, ecu etc. I will be very interested to see what the k-tec zorst will sound like - which one are you getting BTW?

Rolly,

Where do u drive your 172 mainly?? Coz hardly see any 172 around my area(Greenlane, New Market). What colour is your 172??

Ill get the twin 3" rolled one. Btw, I reckon you should get the ECU upgrade as well, since u changed exhaust, without the ECU upgrade, the car will not run as smooth, and for ECU, it is good for your low to mid range, while the exhaust improve your high rev range. And for the air filter, U could try the replacement element air-filter instead of the viper one, because the replacement one wont be as loud as the viper kit and it improve the car from low to mid range too..

Bleed,

Im down south - Manurewa. Shes a silver machine with a euro plate 1SIMON - guess my first name?

The wife works in Epsom, New Market some days so you may well see it.

I only get to drive it on weekends and in the evenings if we go anywhere, and its not often in town. I prefer the company car to pick up the dings from good old Auckland Carparks;)

As far as the ECU - see my dilema, superchip - no more changes - $900, Unichip much more friendly to later mods and $1600, but not warranty friendly :(

Your v6 is rear round here, I believe most of them got um scratched on the trip home from Renault!
