172 engine - a great

  VW Potato

i was just wondering if im alone in thinking that the 172s engine is an unsung hero?

Its powerful, very flexible, not peaky to the detrament of low down pick-up, is smooth from base to peak, shows no nasty temperament, is strong and durable (more so than the rest of the Clio), is excellent on fuel, easy in town, humms nicely on the m-way, sounds great when you floor it, relishes big revs and requires no special maintenance.

Is this engine a great engine or wot? If not, why not?

I like it but major money has to be spent to tune it to over 200bhp, some 1.6 litre engines have nearly as much as the renault lump. Apart from that i like it

Dont forget its relatively new, so u probly wont know if its a good engine for a while

i wouldnt have said it is great on fuel, with my usual driving i am VERY lucky to get 300 miles out of a £33 tank? Does that sound right?

Ok then....

You complain bout fuel consumption. Wot other car would you buy that is as quick as a 172 and has better fuel consuption ( NOT A DOG ).

Anythin with a turbo will be less, a CTR is less...errrrr......

Its better than my old 306 Rallye mate, which does have a great engine (refinement of the acclaimed Mi16 unit) and that used to average 26mpg for me and could get it into the teens if I wanted. Autocar got 10.4mpg out of their test car back in 98 which is terrible!

30 mpg and 0-60 in 7 seconds is nothing short of amazing all round performance.

Sad as it might sound I actually chose my car by looking down all the performance stats in the back of top gear magazine! There just nothing to touch it for the money.

Mines got 6.5k on now and it just keeps getting better. Put it this way it must be good for people to put up with the endless faults with the rest of the car!

I used to get around 29-30mpg out of my Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo. Thats is pretty good considering its 1, a turbo, 2, its 220bhp 227lbft - 0 to 60 in 6 secs, 3,its 5 cylinder engine. Ive had 350 miles from the 60ltr tank.

The vtec engine in the honda s2000 won an award for best 4 cylinder 2ltr engine recently I believe.

I cant really judge the 172 engine..it seems good..it sounds good but (maybe because more people specialise in it) i think the Ford Duratec is better.

it can be very econo if you want it to be, but can also chew the fuel if you toe it everywhere. Pretty obvious really.

Maybe on the trip computer, but not in reality...

Try doing the calcs and working it out for real, they lie!
